IDF INCREASES READINESS IN THE NORTH by Arutz Sheva Staff 📹 To watch the video: https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/268184 Over the past week, the IDF's ground forces, intelligence, Air Force, and Navy improved their preparedness for various scenarios in the Northern Command area and in the 91st Division. In addition, in accordance with the assessment of the situation, it has been decided to postpone the IDF exercise which was planned for the second half of next week. The exercise was designed to enhance IDF readiness and was planned as part of the 2019 training program. Moreover, IDF Chief of Staff Lt. Gen. Aviv Kochavi decided to postpone the end of IDF Spokesperson, Brigadier General Ronen Manelis' term, which was slated for this Tuesday. Manelis will remain in his position and the date of the handover to Brigadier General Hidai Zilberman will be decided upon in the future. Reserve soldiers have received a message regarding the relevant time they need to deploy. 3. ON ISRAEL'S BORDERS, DRONE RIVALRIES PLAY OUT by Guillaume Lavallee, AFP Long a pioneer in drone technology, Israel today sees its superiority challenged by Iran and its ally Hezbollah which are also developing military UAVs. The past week has illustrated the complex and shifting dynamics. On August 24, Israel struck what it said was an attempt to stop an Iranian force from launching a cross-border drone attack from a Syrian village. A day later, two drones which Lebanon said were Israeli crashed in the southern suburbs of the Lebanese capital Beirut, an area dominated by Israel's longtime foe, the Iranian-backed Shia terror group Hezbollah. The Lebanese army later fired at a number of Israeli drones. On Saturday, Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah vowed that Israel "must pay a price" for the alleged August 25 strike. On Sunday, Iran unveiled what it said was a new reconnaissance and attack drone with a range of more than 1,000 kilometers (620 miles). Meanwhile in Iraq, Israel has been accused of being behind several attacks and drone sightings against an Iran-linked militia group. Israel has not confirmed its involvement. Israel also has not claimed responsibility for the drones found in Beirut but accused Hezbollah of making precision missiles in the neighborhood, allegations that may well have been formulated with the help of drone surveillance. The Jewish state's use of unmanned aircraft for gathering information is hardly new. In 1982, during a war in Lebanon, Israel was equipped with drones. After the October war of 1973, in which neighboring Arab states caught Israel unawares, it began developing drones to gather real-time information on its rivals. "In the first Lebanon war, in 1982, the system was operational. It was a surveillance system -- real-time, optical intelligence by camera," French-Israeli David Hariri, who led the project, told AFP. They were gradually fitted with infrared cameras, lasers to identify specific targets and electromagnetic intelligence systems, Hariri, often dubbed the father of Israeli drones, added. "The soldiers had been ordered to use them but they were a bit of mockery -- 'what are we going to do with a small plane like that?'" he recalled. Things changed after they showed their value on the battlefield, he said. Harari said Israel was the first country to create such a national drone program in its military. Drone 'nation' Israel, self-dubbed the "start-up nation", has developed its sector and is now a leading light in the global UAV market. Today, about 50 local start-ups are working on drone prototypes, according to Israel's economy ministry, which says the industry is worth billions. Israel was the leading global exporter of drones between 2005 to 2013, according to a study by a specialist firm. But the drone industry is moving fast with miniaturization, the commercialization of low-cost recreational devices and new players like China, Russia and Iran challenging US and Israeli dominance. "We were the first ones, that is true, but (today) everybody is using them," Uzi Rubin, former head of Israel's missile defense and now an analyst with the Jerusalem Institute for Strategy and Security, said. Smaller drones flying at low altitudes can carry explosive charges and attack military bases or other strategic sites. "This is a threat to any military because it can drop explosives very accurately on key sensitive installations," Rubin said. Rivals Israeli companies such as Skylock and Elbit are developing technologies to take remote control of drones without damaging them, enabling them to recover data from the devices. In October 2012, what was believed to be an Iranian surveillance drone sent by Hezbollah travelled over the Mediterranean to fly for half an hour over the Negev desert, where Israeli nuclear installations are allegedly located, before being shot down. And last year, Israel accused Iran of flying a drone in its airspace on an attack mission. Iranian drone development has given its Lebanese ally Hezbollah access to new air intelligence and attack capabilities, Israeli researcher Liran Antebi recently noted. The war between Israel and Hezbollah in 2006 was the first in history when the number of flight hours of unmanned aircraft was higher than that by manned, according to a study by the University of Tel Aviv. But at the time, the drones were overwhelmingly Israeli. While Israel retains its technological superiority, "Hezbollah is becoming more and more of a military organization that is equipped with advanced weapon systems such as both military and commercial UAVs," Antebi wrote. To its fleet of drones Hezbollah may add anti-drone systems, its leader Hassan Nasrallah recently claimed. "Whenever Israeli drones enter Lebanon's airspace, we will try to shoot them down," he said this week, promising that the days when Israeli drones flew over Lebanon unhindered were over. 4. 'IRAN PUT PRESSURE ON ME TO LOSE, BUT I CAME TO COMPETE' by Arutz Sheva Staff Iranian judoka Saeid Mollaei has requested political asylum in Germany after being forced to throw a match to avoid having to face an Israeli opponent. Israeli judoka Sagi Muki made history Wednesday when he became the first Israeli to win the gold medal at the the Judo World Championship finals in Japan, defeating Belgian opponent Matthias Casse. Mollaei had received a phone call from his mother in Iran instructing him to throw his match against Georgian Judoka Matthias Casse so that he would not have to face Muki in the semi-finals. Moallei, who has criticized his country's policy of refusing to compete against Israeli athletes, reportedly sought asylum in Germany on Saturday following threats against him and his family. In his first interview since Wednesday's match, Moallei denied the reports that he had sought asylum. "I did not apply for asylum, I am not a refugee. I have had a visa in Germany for several years," he told the Iranian TV channel Iran International, which broadcasts from London. Moallei denied that he had thrown his match or refused to compete and stressed that winning was important to him. "Iran put pressure on me to lose, but I didn't come to the competition to do a show, but to really compete." "Winning the gold medal is something which is important to me," he added. MK Yoel Razvozov (Blue and White), himself a former judoka, responded to the controversy by saying that he hoped Moallei's actions "can open the door for athletes forced to sacrifice their careers due to the whims of regimes hostile to Israel, and eventually cause them to change their policy towards Israel." 5. IDF CARRIES OUT OPERATION ON LEBANESE BORDER by Arutz Sheva Staff The IDF confirmed on Sunday that the fires in the Mount Dov region were a result of an IDF operation in the area. Earlier on Sunday, Lebanese media reported that the IDF had fired artillery shells at the Shebaa farms on the Lebanese border. On Saturday night, the IDF announced a postponement of a major exercise planned for this week due to Hezbollah's threats to take revenge on Israel for Israeli strikes in Beirut and Syria last week. The IDF continued to maintain its alert over the weekend, transferring artillery to the Lebanese border and closing the airspace over Kiryat Shmona and Galilee. In addition, IDF Chief of Staff Aviv Kochavi ordered that IDF Spokesman Ronen Manelis, who was due to end his position this week, will remain in office for the time being. He will be replaced by Brigadier General Hedy Zilberman at a later date. 6. NETANYAHU: WE WILL APPLY SOVEREIGNTY TO ALL SETTLEMENTS by Arutz Sheva Staff Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and Education Minister Rabbi Rafi Peretz arrived on Sunday (Sunday) to visit the elementary school in Elkana in western Samaria Sunday to mark the start of the new year. Netanyahu and Peretz participated in the opening ceremony this year and met with the excited children, including the incoming first grade class. After the ceremony, the two will be inaugurating a new educational center and a school for special needs children named after the prime minister's late brother, Yoni Netanyahu. Prime Minister Netanyahu told the students during his speech, "We are building new houses here - this is a new house that is an old house - this is the original old house of the Jewish people and we will build another Elkana. We won't uproot anyone here. There will be no more Gush Katifs, no more displacement, and with the help of G-d we will apply Jewish sovereignty to all [Jewish] communities as part of the Land of Israel and as part of the State of Israel." "I wish you a lively and successful school year. Learn and read - I want you to read books, lots of books. Happy New Year to you all," Netanyahu added. Education Minister Peretz said in his address to the students, "I am very excited to start the year with you. As children in the first grade, this is your first year at school, and for me, this is the first year that I open the school year as the Minister of Education for all Israeli children. First, I welcome the understandings reached with the Teachers and Finance Ministry. I thank all the parties who have demonstrated national responsibility and of course thank you to the Prime Minister who delved into the matter so that we could open the year as normal." "Dear students, summer vacation is over, and I hope that you will return with good energies for doing, learning and meeting with all friends," Peretz added. "This year I declared a year 'mutual responsibility.' As I take on the role, I have set the values as one of the key goals that we will advance in the system over the coming year, and you dear students will always remember to help those in need, those in dire circumstances, to include those who are different, and to bring hearts together. "And another small but big request: If you are having a birthday party or special class meetings please invite all the children. We all want to feel belonging and the right act is to accommodate everyone and invite all the children of the class," the minister added. "The value of excellence and aspects of learning and investment, but that is what complements and strengthens them. Here in Elkana we see the proof of that." 7. SUSPECT ARRESTED AFTER HOSPITAL SYNAGOGUE CATCHES FIRE by Arutz Sheva Staff The Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court last night extended the arrest of a man suspected of burning the synagogue at Beilinson Hospital in Petah Tikva. The investigation began after a report was received on Friday by Israel Police about a synagogue fire inside the hospital compound. A preliminary examination of police officers arriving at the scene and a security camera examination revealed that a man who arrived at the hospital for treatment had entered the synagogue and, as soon as he left, a fire started at the scene. The suspect was identified by police and arrested and at a hearing at Rishon Lezion Magistrate's Court last night, his arrest was extended until Monday. [album:open:11308] 8. DOV HIKIND: 'ENOUGH IS ENOUGH OF JEWS LIVING IN FEAR IN AMERICA' by Chana Roberts Former NY State Assemblyman Dov Hikind responded Friday to the attack on a Jewish man in Crown Heights. In the Thursday attack, the second in a week, a 34-year-old Jewish man took a rock in his eye and suffered cuts to his face. "Violent antisemitism has reached an unbearable limit in NYC," Hikind tweeted. "We need our @NYCMayor to take charge and address not only the symptoms, but the root causes! Enough is enough of Jews living in fear anywhere in America, let alone New York City!" 📹 To watch the video: https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/268185 Thursday's attack happened about a dozen blocks away from where 64-year-old Rabbi Avraham Gopin, the father-in-law of popular Hasidic singer Benny Friedman, was hit in the head by a stone brick that was thrown at him while walking in Crown Heights. In that incident, the attacker allegedly yelled a Jewish slur at Rabbi Gopin and threw a rock in his direction, but missed. Rabbi Gopin, a father of 10, confronted the alleged rock-thrower who then started punching him before fleeing, police said. Rabbi Gopin was hospitalized but is now recovering at home after suffering a broken nose, two broken teeth, bruises. He required several stitches. No arrests have been made in either case, and the hate crime task force is investigating both incidents. | |
