1. Smotrich: Netanyahu will form a leftist governmentby Hezki Baruch Transportation Minister Bezalel Smotrich (United Right) on Wednesday said he expects that Israeli Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu intends to form a leftist government after September's elections. "There are more and more indications showing that Netanyahu is going to form a leftist government," he said. "For that he needs us to be small and weak. Only if we are large and strong will he have no choice and have to form a right-wing government. The United Right will keep Netanyahu on the right." On Tuesday, Netanyahu promised to form a right-wing coalition after the elections, promising not to form a unity government with the center-left parties. In an article published in Israel Hayom, Netanyahu wrote: "My commitment is clear: To form a strong right-wing government after the elections, which will continue to lead the State of Israel to unprecedented achievements and protect the security of Israel's citizens." "This is my obligation to Likud voters. There will not be a unity government. "The choice Israeli citizens are facing in the coming elections centers on one thing: Who will be the next prime minister of the State of Israel? Will a weak and inexperienced left-wing government be formed under the leadership of [Blue and White leaders MKs] Yair Lapid and Benny Gantz? Or will it be a strong right-wing government led by the Likud and myself?" According to Netanyahu, if there is to be a right-wing government, nationalist voters must wake up and cease being apathetic. "[Yisrael Beytenu Chairman MK] Avigdor Liberman told Army Radio last Sunday that he will recommend Benny Gantz for prime minister. We cannot repeat the mistakes from the previous elections, in which right-wing voters lost seven Knesset seats to parties which did not cross the electoral threshold," he said. 2. Lawyer of British teen who accused Israelis of rape quitsby AFP The trial in Cyprus of a British teenager accused of falsely claiming she was gang raped by Israeli tourists was postponed on Wednesday after her lawyer withdrew due to a disagreement. Andreas Pittadjis asked a court in Paralimni in the island's southeast to relieve him of his duty as the woman's defense lawyer. "There is a serious disagreement with the defendant on how to handle the case, so I ask for the court's permission to withdraw," he said. Pittadjis did not elaborate on what those differences were when asked by reporters after the hearing, although the woman had been expected to enter a plea on Wednesday. The case was adjourned until August 19 to allow the 19-year-old British tourist to find a new lawyer. She will remain in police custody until her next court appearance. She faces "public mischief" charges that come with a maximum sentence of one year in prison and a fine of around 1,700 euros. The young woman, who has not been named, was tearful after the lawyer handed her the case file and exited the Famagusta District Court. She covered her face with the hood of her sweatshirt as she left and was put into a police vehicle. Initially, the teenager had alleged that 12 Israelis raped her on July 17 at a hotel in the resort of Ayia Napa, a magnet for younger tourists attracted by its beaches and nightlife. The Israelis aged 15 to 18 were released last month after the woman was arrested on suspicion of "making a false statement about an imaginary crime", according to Cypriot police. But the legal aid group Justice Abroad, which is assisting the teenager, claimed she did not voluntarily retract the rape allegation. Michael Polak, a British barrister with the organisation, said in a statement she had been refused legal representation, despite requests and in contravention of the European Convention on Human Rights. He said the apparent confession was dictated to her and investigators made clear that if she signed it she could return to her hotel, but if she refused she would be arrested. Cypriot police spokesman Christos Andreou rejected the claims as "baseless". 3. Why did Yigal Amir reach out to a rapper?by David Rosenberg An Israeli rapper and right-wing activist recently received a surprising phone call, Channel 13 reported. According to the report, Yoav Eliasi, better known by his stage name “Hatzel” (The Shadow), was one of a number of public figures who recently received phone calls from Yigal Amir, the assassin of Prime Minister Yitzhak Rabin, who is currently serving a life sentence for Rabin’s murder in 1995. Amir reportedly called a number of public figures, including lawyers and Eliasi, who is known for his staunch right-wing views, to lay the groundwork for the formation of a new party dedicated to securing Amir’s release from prison. Eliasi expressed surprise when he was called, and said that he was not interested in the venture. “Within the Russian community,” Amir told Eliasi, “a movement has been established that wants to get me released. There’s about 600 people in it; retirees, academics, etc. Now, they want to establish a party that will run in the next elections, with the goal of getting me freed from prison. One of the goals is also to change the media in this country, which in Israel is totally controlled by the Left. Now, these people aren’t afraid of anything, and they’ve established [this movement] on the internet.” “Excuse me, Yigal,” Eliasi said. “But I’m not getting into this. I don’t want to be involved in it, and I don’t even know if you really are or aren’t [Yigal Amir], I have no idea.” After Amir gave Eliasi his wife’s phone number to confirm his identity, Eliasi said he simply was not interested. “I don’t think that you’re the kind of person I’d like to have a conversation with.” “Really?” responded Amir. “Yes,” confirmed Eliasi. Supporters of the jailed assassin recently formed the “Nura Deliba” party, with the goal of securing Amir’s release. The Labor party, however, called on the Israel Central Elections Committee not to register Nura Deliba, saying the party’s goal of freeing a man who assassinated an Israeli prime minister effectively constituted support for criminal action. Nura Deliba has thus far not been listed on the Central Elections Committee’s website of registered parties for the next election. 4. Woman injured in rocket attack meets the men who saved her lifeby Arutz Sheva Staff Allegra Ben Akan, a resident of Kiryat Gat, suffered a full system trauma injury from a rocket fired by Hamas terrorists at Israel during the last round of missile attacks from Gaza. On Thursday, she met the EMTs who were the first responders at the scene, providing her with medical treatment, and saving her life. Allegra underwent three months of treatments and rehabilitation following the injury. She then returned home, where she requested to meet the volunteers who were the first to respond to the emergency and saved her life. The incident took place on Shabbat (Saturday) afternoon when the warning siren sounded, alerting residents of the city that rockets were headed in their direction. Allegra ran for shelter but did not make it to her safe room in time. She was on the way home when the rocket struck near her location on Malchei Yisrael Street. The shockwave and shrapnel from the rocket caused her injuries and she was listed as being in critical condition. United Hatzalah Volunteer EMTs Yankee Weinberg and Itzik Assoulin, who live nearby, were the first responders at the scene that day and immediately began treating Allegra for her injuries. The first ambulance on the scene arrived a number of minutes after the two had begun treating Allegra's wounds and quickly transported her to the hospital. “We were proud to be able to help Allegra in her time of need,” said Weinberg who runs the United Hatzalah chapter of Kiryat Gat. “We came to help her but it was really from heaven that we were in the area when the missile attack occurred and that we were able to save her life. So many things could have happened that would have made this situation end differently. ” Turning to Allegra, he said: “Thank God you are alive and recuperating now.” “Seeing how Allegra has recovered thus far and knowing that she is on the road to a full recovery makes us ecstatic and gives us the strength to keep on responding to emergencies time and again,” he concluded. “I am shocked to know what you went through to save me,” Allegra told the responders during the meeting. “I didn’t think that I was going to live. I want to thank you but I don’t know how to thank you. I am happy that I can see my children and grandchildren again. I don’t know how to thank you.” Weinberg answered her and told her that “Our thanks is seeing you here today alive.” 5. Watch: Israeli satellite launched into spaceby Ben Ariel [youtube:2061424] Space X on Tuesday launched the Israeli Amos-17 satellite on a Falcon-9 launch vehicle from Cape Canaveral in Florida. The Amos-17 mission was supposed to launch Saturday, but the company decided to postpone it to perform more further checks. Amos-17 is the most advanced high-throughput satellite to provide satellite communication services to Africa. The Spacecom communications satellite company said the launch and subsequent separation of the satellite 33 minutes after launch were both successful, with no malfunctions reported. The $250 million satellite is to remain in continuous contact with the ground station as it makes its way to its designated route. The satellite is expected to arrive at its destination and complete all necessary checks within the next three weeks. "The successful launch, the new technologies, the business potential, and the professional team which led the company all made Israel proud, and ensure the continuation and growth of the company," said Spacecom CEO David Pollack. 6. GSS thwarts Hamas bomb attack in Jerusalemby Mordechai Sones It was permitted to be published that the General Security Service, in collaboration with the IDF and the Israeli police, recently thwarted a bomb attack intended to be carried out in Jerusalem, after they uncovered a ready-to-operate explosive device in Hevron, as well as a sabotage lab where it was assembled. The Shin Bet reports that in recent weeks a number of Hamas military squads have been exposed in the Judea and Samaria area, operating in the Hamas military arm in the Gaza Strip and planning to carry out attacks against Israeli and Palestinian Authority targets. The unit in the Judea and Samaria area was instructed to set up squads to carry out kidnapping, shooting, and stabbing attacks, to purchase weapons, and to recruit additional operatives to carry out Islamic operations. During an intensive GSS investigation, the Hamas squad operating in the Hevron area was exposed acting under the direction of the military wing of the Hamas Islamic organization in the Gaza Strip. Jonathan Pollard: 'My wife is seriously ill, asking for help'by Sara Rubenstein [video:2061359] Former Israeli spy Jonathan Pollard told Channel 12 News in an interview on Monday that he has asked Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to intercede with United States President Donald Trump to ease restrictions on his movement so he can care for his wife, who has been diagnosed with breast cancer. "I have an important topic to bring to public knowledge which is a matter of life and death - a humanitarian concern - a crisis that my wife and I are going through," Pollard said.
"I ask Netanyahu to personally contact President Trump and request relief on my terms of release," Pollard asserted. "I'm confident, hopeful that Netanyahu can make this call. I was told by Netanyahu's office that he would get involved. I can't imagine Netanyahu not making an effective call. I can't imagine Trump refusing." Pollard said in the interview that his freedom from prison is like a "virtual prison" because of all the restrictions placed on him. "I want to make it very clear that I'm not doing anything in violation of my parole guidelines at all," Pollard clarified. "So I want people to be reassured on that score. I specifically invited you here to our home so that people wouldn't see in an interview on the street that they would misinterpret as an ambush." The Prime Minister's Office responded to the Pollard's interview on Monday night: "Israel remains committed to Jonathan Pollard's return. The prime minister will continue to work toward his return to Israel." When Pollard was released from prison in 2015 after serving 30 years of his life sentence for transmitting classified information to Israel, his parole commission imposed strict parole guidelines. He is not allowed to leave his home between 7 p.m. and 7 a.m., he is monitored by a GPS device, even on Shabbat and holidays, and his computers are monitored. 8. Which murderers enjoyed MK visits?by Mordechai Sones A procession of visits by Knesset Members and elected officials to security prisoners serving sentences in Israel from 2010 to 2012 was unveiled this evening on News 12. The prisoner who received the largest number of visits was Marwan Barghouti, who was sentenced to five cumulative life sentences plus 40 years in prison, and who took part in planning a series of Islamic attacks. Perhaps surprisingly, perhaps not, topping Barghouti's visitor list is former Meretz Chairman Chaim Oron. Oron did not deny the meetings and said in response, "I thought it was important that he also had contact with an Israeli party and we had continuous contact in dozens of meetings, even beyond what you wrote." Barghouti is considered a prominent leader of "Palestinian" society, and among MKs visiting him were Labor Chairman Amir Peretz, Dov Hanin and Arab MKs such as Jamal Zahalka, Ahmed Tibi, Esawi Frej and more. Hassan Salameh, who planned the Bus 18 explosion attack in which 64 people were murdered, received a visit from MK Jamal Zahalka from Balad Party. Zahalka claimed in response that he meets with prison inmates regardless of the cause of their imprisonment. Abbas a-Sayyid is serving 35 years in prison for his part in planning the Park Hotel attack in 2002, in which 29 people were murdered and about a hundred wounded. A-Sayyid enjoyed several visits, including five by former Joint Arab List head Ibrahim Tsurzur. MK visits to incarcerated murderers were made by virtue of their parliamentary immunity. Visits have been greatly reduced following the case of cell phone smuggling into prison by former MK Basel Gatas. However, legal advisers are now refusing to continue to defend the reduction policy.
