2. 'Our hearts are broken over a dear and beloved student'

by Eliran Aharon

Rabbi Sharel Rosenblatt, Rabbi Yossi Froman, and Yinon Achiman of Ohr Torah Machanaim spoke this morning following the murder of the yeshiva student Dvir Sorek.

Rabbi Sharel Rosenblatt noted, "We're all hurting; hurting, sad, and our hearts are broken over a dear and beloved student who was taken from us, who was murdered in cold blood. Dvir Sorek, a student who from the moment he entered the yeshiva with his embracing eyes, his sweet peyot, his love of Torah, his love of mankind, his melodies and poetry that enveloped us all in magic, was beloved by all students."

"It is a great loss for the family; of course, we embrace them and send them all our love, and to Yeshivat Machanaim and Ohr Torah Stone. It's a great loss to Israeli society, a person who truly loved people," he added.

Rabbi Yossi Froman, who was Dvir's teacher, stressed that he did not want to deal with the details of the incident: "What matters is that a person who was full of love was taken. He came to us as a person full of love, we just tried to raise him and bring such a soldier to the army and then such a civilian to the service of Israeli society."

He says Dvir was "connected to the land, to these landscapes we see here, that are connected to Israeli society. I think that love will prevail and these monsters will lose."

Ohr Torah Stone Institutions head Rabbi Dr. Kenneth Brander reacted to the murder of Dvir Sorek, son of journalist Yoav Sorek and grandson of Rabbi Binyamin Herling is the yeshiva student murdered in Gush Etzion: "Early this morning we found a student of ours who was murdered in a horrific terrorist attack.

"He had gone to Jerusalem to buy books as this was the last day of yeshiva, to say thank you to his rabbis before he was going to go into the army. He's a student soldier, as part of the Hesder movement of Beren Machanayim, and he called his study partner to say 'I'm going to be back in time for 8:30, for our learning session.

"When he didn't come back, immediately we informed the police and IDF; the students were all looking for him, we found him, and we mourn his loss today as a true recognition of what the Nine Days and Tisha b'Av are all about: The idea that we have a dream to build this land, this land in tolerance, and yet there are still sacrifices that are made. The best amongst us are often sacrificed as we build our dream as a community, as the people of Israel," Brander said.

Dvir Sorek was a hesder student at Ohr Torah Mahanayim. Dvir, 19, a resident of Ofra, was the son of journalist Yoav Sorek, editor of the "Hashiloah" publication, and his wife Rachel, grandson of Rabbi Binyamin Herling, who was murdered in a terror attack on Mt. Ebal.

Sorek was murdered last night and his body found towards morning near Kibbutz Migdal Oz in Gush Etzion. Security forces dispatched to the scene began extensive searches.

4. 'We will not weaken as a nation and as an enterprise'

by Arutz Sheva Staff

Gush Etzion Regional Council head Shlomo Ne’eman responded to the murderous attack this morning.

"Gush Etzion was awakened to a hard morning of unalloyed bloodshed by lowly murderers. We are a firm and strong community, experienced in bereavement and heroism.

"We will not weaken as a nation and as an enterprise. In these days of the month of Av, mourning days for the destruction of the Temples and the long exile, we declare with heads held high that our stay in the land of our forefathers is not a passing episode but an existing fact - forever. Our bitter enemies may repeatedly try to hurt us, but our response, like that of the Gush Etzion fighters in the War of Independence, is more determined than ever.”

He added: "We send our condolences to the dear and aching family, and to the yeshiva in which the hero learned. Be strong and have courage! And to the Israeli government we say again - end this war with a victory. Cut off the imaginations of the evil ones. Don't leave them any option. That is the only way to be clear and not leave an opening for their hope. The sovereignty of Israel in Gush Etzion in particular and in Judea and Samaria in general is the only national answer.”

5. 'They come to uproot - we come to plant'

by Arutz Sheva Staff

Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu set a foundation stone Thursday for the construction of a neighborhood of 650 new housing units in Beit El.

At the beginning of his remarks, the prime minister said, "We promised to build hundreds of housing units in Beit El - today we are doing it, both because we have promised and because our purpose is to establish the people of Israel in its land, to secure our sovereignty in our historic homeland."

"We know that the Land of Israel is acquired through suffering. Today another of our sons fell, one of our best sons from a family that has already made a heavy sacrifice for the Land of Israel," Netanyahu noted.

He said, "These vicious terrorists, they come to uproot - we come to plant. They are come to destroy - we come to build. Our hands will achieve that which we seek and we will deepen our roots in our homeland, in all its parts."

by Arutz Sheva Staff

Rabbi Shlomo Vilk, the head of the yeshiva where the soldier found murdered this morning studied, told Galei Tzahal that the soldier was "in the world of fear of God and of joy and goodness."

"He always walked around with a smile on his face, sometimes his outward appearance hid the good and wisdom and love of every person."

"He was really in touch with animals and humans. He decided to study in a yeshiva that has interfaith meetings, Torah, that has a lot of family, no matter who the person is, all types of students: secular, religious, Arab, anyone who can be heard.”

"He was one of the most dedicated people, it's hard to grasp that he's gone. "

Vilk added: "He went to Jerusalem to buy gifts for his rabbis to show his appreciation, and on the way back this terrible attack happened. He was found embracing the books he had bought."

"We are shocked. Where do we go now? Primarily in the next minute and the next hour?"

7. 'I didn't know they had drugged my hooka'

by David Rosenberg

A 15-year-old Israeli girl who accused three Egyptians of drugging her and attempting to rape her spoke out Wednesday about the incident.

The teen returned to Israel from a vacation in the Sinai Peninsula two weeks ago, after surviving attempts at rape and even attempts to force her to marry an Egyptian man.

Friends notice that the girl was not herself following the incident, and she claims a 20-year-old Egyptian man who befriended her at the Azure Lodge in Sinai, where the man worked, spiked a hooka she was using with mind-altering drugs, believed to be datura, in order to take advantage of her.

“I didn’t know that they had snuck in hallucinogenic drugs,” said the girl, according to Channel 12. “I thought it was a regular hooka.”

“The young employee tried to get close to be repeatedly, but I shoved him away. I realized that something wasn’t right, that he did something bad to me. He had said he was my best friend.”

“I trusted people, but after this incident I have no faith in them anymore.”

During her stay at Azure Lodge, the girl was reportedly pressured into marrying a 56-year-old Egyptian man. Two men dressed her in traditional Bedouin clothing, while trying to convince her to stay and marry the 56-year-old man.

Even after her return to Israel, one of the Egyptian men continued, via SMS messages, to urge her to return to Egypt to get married. “We’ll have lots of kids together,” he wrote in one message.

Still under the influence of the drugs when she first returned to Israel, the teen told her parents she planned to marry him and have 15 children with him.

Following her return to Israel, the girl’s mother realized she was under the influence of mind-altering drugs, and had the girl brought in for assessment. The teen was given medication and psychiatric treatment for the effects of the hallucinogenic drugs she had unwittingly taken.

Later, the girl’s parents filed a complaint with the Egyptian embassy in Israel, demanding the perpetrators be punished.

“I demand that those who hurt my daughter be punished to the full extent of the law,” the mother said. “This is an outrage, they could have killed her.

On Monday, Egyptian officials announced that they had arrested three suspects in connection with the case, including the 20-year-old lodge employee and the 56-year-old man whom the girl was pressured into marrying.

The case is just the latest in a recent series of claims by Israeli girls and women who say they were drugged and sexually assaulted during their stays at lodges in the Sinai.

In April, a number of Israeli women claimed they were drugged and raped by one of the managers at the Fayrouz Beach Camp and Yoga Studio in Nuweiba, Sinai.

The manager, Ahmed Sulieman, said that he had had consensual relations with “400 Israeli women”, but denied he had raped any of the lodge’s guests. “Do I look like I need to rape girls?” Sulieman said following the accusations.
