1. DERI: I 'WANTED TO' OPPOSE OSLO
by Mordechai Sones
Historical distortion? Interior Minister Aryeh Deri said today that as a member of the Rabin government, he "wanted to" oppose the Oslo plan, but his spiritual mentor Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ordered him to stand down.
"As a government member, I wanted to vote against the Oslo agreements, but at the last minute Rabbi Ovadia Yosef ordered me to refrain," Deri told Army Radio.

He added, "I sat next to the Chief of Staff at the time, Ehud Barak, who told me the agreement was full of holes like Swiss cheese. I informed Rabin about my objections and then (Rabin's personal assistant) Shimon Sheves turned to Rabbi Ovadia Yosef who called me. I explained to him the opposition of the security personnel to the agreement and he told me: 'Abstaining from action is preferable'."
The Shas Chairman admitted he had absorbed the subsequent criticism. "I paid a heavy price because of people from among us and others, who wanted to demonize Shas, and painted it as if I led Oslo. My big mistake was that I didn't immediately refute these lies."
He also said that in a personal diary published by Rabbi Ovadia Yosef 18 years ago, he told him to abstain in the vote despite the political price.
2. 'ERDOGAN IS TRYING TO TAKE OVER THE ISRAELI MARKET'
by Hezki Baruch
Workers from the Hartuv cement company demonstrated today, Wednesday, in front of the ministry of finance against dumping that could harm their livelihood.
The workers protested the severe damage to the livelihood of hundreds of families from Beit Shemesh and the surrounding area resulting from the import of cement from Turkey and Greece at dumping prices.
According to the demonstrators, Turkish and Greek cement is currently cheaper in Israel than in the countries of origin. In light of the situation, the plant in Beit Shemesh is in danger of being closed.
The workers point a finger at the state, saying that allowing the cement to be imported only serves Turkish President Erdogan's economic interests instead of protecting Israeli industry and economy. The demonstrators called on Finance Minister Moshe Kahlon to prevent the severe damage to hundreds of workers and their families.
"It does not make sense that the State of Israel told us to come to work and produce high quality cement in order to increase competition, and then it allows Erdogan to flood the country with cheaper cement than what is known in Turkey," said Avi Elimelech, chairman of the workers' union and electrical engineer at the Hartuv factory in Beit Shemesh. "It does not make sense that hundreds of families from Beit Shemesh and the surrounding area will be harmed like this. We do not seek to stop imports, we do not ask for privileges, only to do the logical and right thing, and to allow us to make a decent living and to compete fairly. "
Shraga Brosh, president of the Manufacturers Association of Israel, said: "Importing at dumping prices constitutes a violation of both international trade agreements and Israeli law, and today imports are severely damaging the local cement industry. Today in the state of Israel, there are only two local cement producers that employ hundreds directly and thousands of others second and third-hand, alongside a number of importers, and it is our responsibility as a state to protect them and ensure that their factories will continue to function. The existence of a local industry for the production of cement is a national interest of the highest order in every country, and in the State of Israel in particular. This, inter alia, is for reasons of state security and ensuring the ability for independent production in times of crisis," he said.

3. BOOK CLAIMING MALICIOUS INTENT BEHIND IDF NOT KILLING WINS AWARD
by Tal Polon
A professor has been awarded by the National Women's Studies Association (NWSA) for a book in which she claims that the IDF aims "to control" Palestinian Arabs by wounding them rather than killing them during confrontations.
Jasbir Puar, associate professor of women's and gender studies at Rutgers University, co-won the NWSA's 2018 Alison Piepmeier Book Prize for her book "The Right to Maim: Debility, Capacity, Disability." In the book, Puar asserts one of the "Israeli tactical calculations of settler colonial rule" is that of "shooting to maim rather than to kill" during confrontations between IDF soldiers and Palestinian Arabs. She says that by doing so, the IDF "maintain[s] Palestinian populations as perpetually debilitated, and yet alive, in order to control them."
"Shooting to maim in order not to kill might appear as minor relief given the proclivity to shoot to kill," she writes, "[but] both are part of the deliberate debilitation of a population [...] and are key elements in the racializing biopolitical logic of security. Both are mobilized to make power visible on the body [...] Both are forms of the racialization of individuals and populations [...]"
In granting the award to Puar, who also wrote that the purpose of the book "is to labor in the service of a Free Palestine," the awards committee praised her book as "a paradigm shift in thinking fully about the global politics of disability and capacity."
"Puar argues that debilitation and the state production of disability are biopolitical projects both useful and productive for states under Neoliberal capitalism," the committee said, concluding that book was a "major milestone."
The twisting of IDF intentions to make everything it does - or does not do - appear malicious is reminiscent of a research paper that won a Hebrew University teachers' committee prize with its conclusion that the lack of IDF rapes of Palestinian Arab women is "an alternate way of realizing [particular] political goals."
"In the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, it can be seen that the lack of military rape merely strengthens the ethnic boundaries and clarifies the inter-ethnic differences - just as organized military rape would have done," the paper asserted.
4. IRISH WOMAN DISCOVERED SHE WAS PREGNANT AT 37 WEEKS
by Arutz Sheva Staff
An Irish student discovered she was pregnant at 37 weeks, RTE reported.
Then-22-year-old Laura Molloy said she gave birth to an 8-pound baby in April 2015, just a month after learning that she was pregnant.
Home pregnancy tests had repeatedly turned up negative, she said, adding that she did not feel movement, had no "baby bump," and did not suffer from morning sickness.
Molloy, sure she had terminal cancer, had made an appointment with her college doctor after she began tiring easily, her legs felt like they had been "pumped full of air," and her fingers had swollen.
Though the doctor measured Molloy's abdomen at 17 weeks, the baby's femur length showed that she was 37 weeks pregnant. The doctor also told Molloy that she was high risk due to a rare blood type.
Speaking to RTE, Molloy said the doctor took out "this wand" and "all I could hear was a [heartbeat]." Her first thought was, "At least I'm not dead yet," but the doctor said, "That's not your heartbeat, it's the baby's."
She quoted the doctor as saying that "the only reason she could think of" for the negative pregnancy tests was that "I was already past 28 weeks and the hormone that gives you a positive pregnant test has already left [my] system."
Three years later, Molloy says she "can't remember a world" without her son Finn and "certainly don't ever want to live in one without him."
5. EX-MINISTER: LET THE REFORM BUILD A WESTERN WALL IN BERLIN
by Ben Shaul
Former MK Eli Yishai slammed the Reform community, suggesting they "build a Western Wall in Berlin."
"The Reform's history, for those who don't know, began 200 years ago," Yishai said in an interview with Channel 20. "They said Jerusalem is too old, and Berlin is their new capital city, they don't need Jerusalem. Obviously, they don't need the Western Wall. So it's all nonsense anyways."
"It's all just to fight and make wars with others," he emphasized. "So I suggest the Reform build themselves a Western Wall either in Berlin or New York, everywhere where they are. And if they truly want, they can come to the Western Wall."
"If someone Reform or Conservative truly wants to come to the Western Wall, he's invited to do so. It's for everyone. Everyone can come pray at the Western Wall."
Slamming the Western Wall plan, Yishai said, "What does it mean, a Western Wall that's for Reform only? So now you're going to make a Western Wall for every sector? For the hasidim, for the Lithuanian-haredim, for the Reform, for the Conservative? It's all nonsense. This is an unnecessary fight. I suggest we drop it."
6. ISRAEL SELLS SAUDI ARABIA IRON DOME
by Mordechai Sones
The Saudi-based Al-Khaleej Online reported today that Saudi Arabia had acquired an Iron Dome system from Israel to defend itself from missile attacks by the Houthi rebels in Yemen.
According to the report, the deal was mediated by the United States, in which the Saudis undertook that the system would not endanger Israel or its allies.
Israeli security sources say this is a significant development in the relationship between Israel and Saudi Arabia.

According to the report, Israel initially refused to sell the Saudis to the system because the two countries have no diplomatic relations and the system may be used against it. Saudi Arabia involved the Americans who exerted pressure and brought about a change in the Israeli position.
The deal is due to take place within a few months and the first battery is due to arrive in Saudi Arabia before 2019.
Knowledgeable observers have suggested the move may indicate Israel has developed a newer version of the system.
Iron Dome was designed to detect, evaluate, and intercept missiles, cannon rounds, mortars, helicopters, and air threats. Launched by the Israeli Air Force in April 2011, Iron Dome intercepted more than 1,000 rockets fired from Gaza in Southern and Central Israel, with a 90% success rate.
Although Israel remains the sole operator of Iron Dome, several countries have expressed interest in the system, including the United States. Raytheon is working toward production of a US version of Iron Dome called the SkyHunter® missile that could someday defend forward-deployed American forces.

7. ATTACKS ON HASIDIC WOMEN CONTINUE OVER ROSH HASHANAH
by David Rosenberg
Authorities in the central Israeli city of Rehovot have opened an investigation into a recent series of attacks on Hasidic Jews outside of a local synagogue.
Members of the Kretshnif Hasidic movement in Rehovot say have been targeted in recent weeks by unknown assailants who hurl frozen eggs at the Hasidim during the Sabbath.
Every Saturday for the past month, locals say, the same grey Hyundai drives past the local Kretshnif synagogue while men from the Kretshnif men are inside praying or meeting with the Rebbe.
As the car passes by, eggs – often times frozen eggs – are hurled at the Kretshnif women and girls as they stroll around outside of the synagogue.
"It's a terrifying sight," one witness told Kikar Hashabbat.
"A grey Hyundai drives by at high speed, approaches the women and girls who are standing in the street, and hurls frozen eggs at them. Getting hit by a cold egg is quite painful, and the women here were absolutely terrified to the point of hysteria. I hope someone will put a stop to this."
Since the attacks occur during the Sabbath, the Hasidim are unable to report the incidents to police in real time, making it more difficult to locate and apprehend the perpetrators.
During the two-day Rosh Hashanah festival this week, Kretshnif Hasidim say the attacks took place multiple times.
A member of the Kretshnif Hasidic movement filed a formal complaint with police, who have opened an investigation into the attacks.
8. UN CONFIRMS: ASSAD USED CHEMICAL WEAPONS
by Guy Cohen
UN investigators confirmed on Wednesday that forces loyal to the Syrian government had used chlorine gas in three attacks on the suburbs of Damascus and the city of Idlib earlier this year, committing war crimes.
The conclusion is included in a report submitted by the Commission of Inquiry on Syria. Overall, the Commission has documented 39 chemical weapons attacks in Syria since 2013 - 33 of which were carried out by government forces.
A UN source told Reuters that it was not yet clear who was behind the remaining six attacks.
The use of chlorine gas as a weapon has been prohibited under the Chemical Weapons Convention, which was ratified by Syria, the researchers noted.
According to them, Syrian government forces carried out "indiscriminate attacks in densely populated civilian areas" as part of an effort to recapture eastern Ghouta. These attacks included the use of chemical weapons in Douma outside Damascus on January 22 and February 1. The chemical weapons were launched with the help of artillery rockets manufactured in Iran.
In Idlib, chlorine gas was used on February 4.
