1. BACK TO THE KNESSET? AYELET SHAKED CONFIRMS NEW ELECTION BID
by David Rosenberg
Former Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked (New Right) will run in this September's election for the 22nd Knesset, Shaked confirmed Tuesday.
Speaking at a conference Tuesday hosted by the Associate of Corporate Counsel Israel (ACC) in Tel Aviv, Shaked responded to questioning from journalist Ben Caspit regarding her plans for the upcoming election.
"I'll be returning now," the former Justice Minister said.
Shaked, who less than two months ago announced she was leaving politics, began hinting at a possible return after coalition talks between Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu and allies failed to yield an agreement, culminating in a decision to dissolve the Knesset and go to early elections.
Last week, Shaked alluded to a possible return to the Justice Ministry, just days after Netanyahu fired her, transferring the ministry to Likud MK Amir Ohana.
"To my replacement – when he will come – I say: you're getting a ministry that is in very good condition, first-hand from the producer. Take care of it – and I'm not going to hide the fact that I have some personal interest in this request. I definitely plan on coming back here."
During Tuesday's conference, Caspit pressed Shaked to clarify whether her comments last week indicated a general desire to return to the Justice Ministry at some future date, or whether she had settled on returning to politics for the September election.
"Will be you in the next election?"
Shaked responded, saying "Wait and see."
When Caspit asked again, however, Shaked confirmed she would be running for the 22nd Knesset.
"Yes, the plan is [to run] now."
2. ONE KILLED IN JERUSALEM CAR ACCIDENT
by Mordechai Sones
A serious accident occurred this evening in Jerusalem, when a boy was killed and two other people moderately and lightly injured when a motorcycle hit a pedestrian on Kolitz Street in the city.
The motorcycle, ridden by two youths, collided with the female pedestrian. The two boys were thrown off the motorcycle. One of them was critically injured and, after many resuscitation efforts, died of his wounds.
His friend was moderately injured and the pedestrian was lightly injured. The two received treatment at the Hadassah Ein Karem hospital.
MDA paramedics Yishai Levi and Eli Farhi, who arrived at the scene, said, "When we got to the place, we saw the motorcycle in the middle of the road and three people on the pavement. A 16-year-old boy suffering from severe systemic injury was unconscious, without a pulse or breathing, and immediately we began to give him medical treatment and resuscitation, but unfortunately his injury was fatal and soon the paramedics were forced to determine his death.
"The other rider, about 16 years old, was moderately injured in the stomach and limbs, and the 49-year-old female pedestrian was lightly injured was treated on site and evacuated to the Hadassah Ein Karem hospital in the city in stable condition," the two added.
In the afternoon, a 4-year-old girl was seriously injured when she was run over by a car while crossing the road in Beitar Illit.
Magen David Adom paramedics and United Hatzalah first-responders gave her initial medical treatment and evacuated her in critical condition to hospital.
The police are investigating the accident and have questioned the driver.
United Hatzalah medic Hezi Segal who arrived at the scene said, "When I arrived with other paramedics, we gave the girl primary medical assistance. She was hit by a car and suffered from injuries to her lower limbs.
"After initial treatment we gave her at the scene of the accident she was evacuated to continue receiving medical treatment in a hospital in Jerusalem," Segal said.
3. SAUDI TEEN FACING EXECUTION FOR 'CRIMES" HE COMMITED AT AGE 10
by Sara Rubenstein
Saudia Arabia is seeking the execution of an 18-year old for crimes he committed as young as age 10, according to a recent CNN report.
Murtaja Qureiris, a member of Saudi Arabia's minority Shi'a community, was arrested at age 13 and has been sitting in jail ever since. He currently is facing execution for various charges, including taking part in government protests during the 2011 Arab Spring movement when he was 10. Other charges include his attendance at his brother's funeral who was killed at a protest in 2011, joining a "terrorist organization" and throwing Molotov cocktails at a police station.
According to the CNN report, Qureiris has denied the charges and claims that the confession that the prosecution is relying on was obtained under duress.
Amnesty International confirmed the CNN report. "There should be no doubt that the Saudi Arabian authorities are ready to go to any length to crack down on dissent against their own citizens, including by resorting to the death penalty for men who were merely boys at the time of their arrest," said Amnesty International's Middle East research director, Lynn Maalouf. "It is appalling that Murtaja Qureiris is facing execution for offenses that include taking part in protests while he was just 10 years old."
When Qureiris was arrested at age 13, he was considered at the time to be the youngest political prisoner in Saudi Arabia. Amnesty International, which followed what happened to Qureiris over the course of his five-year detention, said that Qureiris was put in solitary confinement for a month and was intimidated and beaten. The CNN report added that over the course of Qureiris' detention in prison, he's been in solitary confinement for at least one year and three months.
"His interrogators promised to release him if he confessed to the charges against him," Amnesty International said. "In May 2017 he was moved to al-Mabaheth prison in al-Dammam, an adult prison, even though he was just 16 years old."
Maalouf said that according to international law, the death penalty is banned for those under age 18. "The Saudi Arabian authorities have a chilling track record of using the death penalty as a weapon to crush political dissent and punish anti-government protesters — including children — from the country's persecuted Shi'a minority," she said.
"The international community … has a crucial role — they must take a public stand on these cases and demand that the Saudi authorities end their use of the death penalty once and for all," Maalouf concluded.
The CNN report added that if Qureiris is executed, he would be the fourth minor prisoner to be executed this year for crimes allegedly committed before age 18. Two of the other three minors were also arrested for alleged violence during the Arab Spring and executed as part of a mass execution of 37 prisoners, most of whom were Shi'a. They were sentenced based on confessions which the prisoners claimed were made under duress due to torture.
4. LIBERMAN SLAMS 'MESSIANIC HAREDIM'
by Arutz Sheva Staff
Yisrael Beytenu Chairman Avigdor Liberman asserted Tuesday that the next government would be a "haredi government" that would act for religious coercion.
"The current election campaign revolves around one issue: Will the rightist bloc become a haredi bloc, with Yisrael Beytenu outside the coalition, or will a national, right and liberal government be formed with Yisrael Beytenu?" Liberman said.
"Netanyahu's starting five are: Litzman, Gafni, Deri, Smotrich and Ben-Gvir - without Yisrael Beytenu and without Avigdor Liberman. This is not what I say, these are Netanyahu's public statements, every day in 'Netanyahu Hayom,'" he added, in a jab at the Israel Hayom newspaper perceived as staunchly pro-Netanyahu.
According to Liberman, "What prevented the establishment of such a coalition is 1 Knesset seat. Imagine if the United Right had 7 seats instead of the 5 they have today, and a coalition of 62 MKs was set up with Orit Struck, Ben-Gvir, Smotrich, Litzman, Deri and Gafni."
"The only one in a right-wing coalition that can stop this madness is Yisrael Beytenu. Only we can prevent a situation in which a right-wing government is being blackmailed by messianic haredim."
He added: "Anyone who wants to see the State of Israel continue on the path of sanity and a responsible and liberal policy, first and foremost with regard to matters of religion and state, must vote for Yisrael Beytenu. We will not allow the continuation of religious coercion and the attempt to change the status quo. Yisrael Beytenu is the only party to come to these elections with credentials for this."
5. RABBI ELIYAHU: HELP WOMEN HARMED BY RABBI SHEINBERG
by Rafael Levi
The Rabbi of Tzfat, Rabbi Shmuel Eliyahu, published a video supporting women who were harmed by Ezra Sheinberg, calling on the public to help them.
"I was privileged to accompany them on part of their path," said Rabbi Eliyahu, adding: "I saw what lionesses, heroines, brave and special women they are."
At the end of the video, the rabbi said: "We need to help as much as possible, because that is how we will eradicate the spirit of impurity from the land."
The video of Rabbi Eliyahu joins other recently published videos, including of rabbis and rabbanits such as Malka Piotrkowsky and Yehudit Shilat, who called to help the victims with the fundraising process in which they now find themselves.
The victims of Sheinberg embarked on a mass mobilization campaign to raise money to help them in the civil suit they are now conducting against Sheinberg, and to help fund the psychological treatments they need.
They wrote on their Facebook page: "It's hard for us to say this out loud, but we, the victims of Ezra Sheinberg, need the help of the public. Years of treatment and legal proceedings and caused us to go into huge financial debt. We are at a crossroads where we must decide - do we ask for help or abandon everything because of debt? We have decided to fight. For ourselves, for our families, so that there will be no more women harmed in the future."
Sheinberg, the former Dean of Orot Ha'ari yeshiva in Tzfat, was convicted as part of a plea bargain for sexually assaulting eight women and sentenced to seven-and-a-half years in prison.
According to the victims' Facebook and fundraising pages, five of the women mentioned in the indictment, lamenting what they said was a "softened plea bargain, against our expressed wishes," are now filing a civil suit against Sheinberg, requesting "the aid of the public in enacting justice."

7. IDF SOLDIERS, PA SECURITY FORCES EXCHANGE FIRE IN SHECHEM
by Ben Ariel
Palestinian Arab officials reported on Monday night that IDF forces had surrounded the building of the Palestinian Preventive Security headquarters in Shechem (Nablus).
According to the officials, an exchange of fire broke out, likely between the IDF soldiers and the Palestinian Arab security officers stationed at the building. The circumstances of the incident are unclear at this time.
The Shechem governor of the Palestinian Authority, Ibrahim Ramadan, claimed that the forces had fired at Preventive Security headquarters. He said that one member of the PA security forces was wounded.
Ramadan also said that the shooting took place on the first, second and third floors of the headquarters. He claimed that Israel did not update the Palestinian District Coordination Office before entering Shechem.
The IDF confirmed the incident in a statement released Tuesday morning, adding that no Israeli personnel were injured in the shooting.
"Overnight, during an operational activity of IDF troops to apprehend terror operatives in the city of Nablus, fire was exchanged between IDF troops and a group of armed men who were identified by the troops as suspects. In retrospect, the men were Palestinian security forces. No injuries to IDF soldiers were reported. The incident will be reviewed."
8. RABBI ATTACKED IN NORTHEAST ARGENTINA
by JTA
A rabbi in Rosario, the third most populous city in Argentina, was verbally and physically attacked in violence that has been characterized as anti-Semitic.
Rabbi Shlomo Tawil, of the local Chabad-Lubavitch organization, was attacked Sunday night by three men in the city center of Rosario, located in the northeast of the country. The men shouted anti-Semitic epithets before removing the rabbi's hat and trampling it on the ground, and then beating the rabbi, who was walking alone.
The attack, which was stopped by the intervention of passersby, has been characterized as anti-Semitic since the attackers meant specifically to hurt the rabbi and did not steal anything from him.
The local representative of the DAIA Jewish political umbrella in Argentina, Gabriel Dobkin told local media Monday that the organization would file a complaint with police in the coming hours. He said that police were working with a city prosecutor to determine If the attack was captured on surveillance cameras and called for a thorough investigation. He called the violence against the rabbi "a fierce, cowardly, anti-Semitic attack."
DAIA and the Jewish community of Rosario said in a joint statement that they "demand from the authorities a total and absolute clarification of this unfortunate event."
"We hope that these violent people will be definitively eradicated from the Argentine society that has chosen the path of coexistence, peace and justice," the statement also said.
The rabbi is recovering at home with his family. Originally from Buenos Aires, he has served as the Chabad emissary in Rosario since 1987, and is married with eight children and two grandchildren.
The president of the local city parliament, Antonio Bonfatti, tweeted Monday that "as a society we cannot allow these acts of violence and intolerance," and called for "peace and coexistence."
The attack on Tawil is the third physical anti-Semitic attack in the last two months. There other two took place in Buenos Aires, one in April and one in May.
