PHILANTHROPIST EUGEN GLUCK PASSES AWAY AT 92 by Arutz Sheva Staff 📹 To watch the video: https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/267979 Renowned philanthropist and lay leader of American Jewry Eugen Gluck passed away last night in New York at the age of 92. Gluck was a Holocaust survivor, and was later instrumental in securing the rights of the Jewish people to rebuild their lives in Judea and Samaria. Gluck was involved with multiple institutions and projects to benefit Israel and world Jewry including Shaarei Zedek Hospital in Jerusalem, the Magen David Adom emergency responder organzation, and the Yad VaShem Holocaust Memorial Museum in Jerusalem. But the bulk of Gluck's philanthropic activities were dedicated to the renewal of Jewish life in the ancient biblical town of Beit El. Upon meeting the young Yom Kippur War hero and later-to-be Knesset Member Yaakov "Ketzaleh" Katz in the 1970’s, the Glucks 'adopted' the town of Bet El as the primary recipient of their philanthropy. For four decades, the Glucks organized, sponsored and presided over the Bet El Institutions' Winter Gala, what became the largest Zionist dinner on the east coast of the United States. Guest Speakers at the annual gala included prominent political figures such as Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu, Former Prime Minister Ariel Sharon, Former Prime Minister Ehud Olmert, Knesset Speaker Yuli Edelstein and US National Security Advisor John Bolton. Gluck's philanthropy and organizational efforts were the driving force behind the establishment of the many educational institutions in Bet El including the Bet El Yeshiva Center for college-age men, the local Yeshiva High School for boys, and the Jeanie Gluck High School Academy for Girls. Literally thousands of students received their education at these prominent and sought-after schools, all under the sponsorship of the Gluck family. In 2002, the Glucks expanded their support even further across Israel by establishing the Gluck Israel Defense Forces Preparatory Academy in Bet El. The Gluck Prep Academy has since brought in over 1,000 youth from disadvantaged socio-economic backgrounds across the country, providing them with a vital year of intensive training prior to their army service. During their year at the Gluck Academy, these students undergo massive transformations, many of them moving from a life of drugs, crime, and welfare, to enlisting as some of the most dedicated soldiers in combat units, obtaining university degrees, and ultimately becoming well-adjusted and contributing members of Israeli society. The Gluck’s philanthropy did not benefit Bet El alone. Rather, their support fueled Arutz Sheva Israel National Radio Station, founded by Bet El Institutions in the late 1980’s, which became the first conservative voice on Israel’s airwaves. The radio station, along with a robust website in English and Hebrew and the nationally-distributed Hebrew weekly BeSheva, effected the political revolution which returned Israel’s nationalist camp to power, alongside massive construction to cement Israel’s sovereignty in the Judea and Samaria regions. Mr. Gluck and his late wife Jeanie were among the earliest American Jewish philanthropists to recognize the urgency and importance of extending the Jewish return to Zion into the recently liberated territories of Judea and Samaria and the eastern neighborhoods of Jerusalem. In 1990, when Ketzaleh was promoted to be the senior advisor to Housing Minister Ariel Sharon in charge of building of 60,000 housing units in Judea and Samaria, it was Mr. Gluck who was on the phone with Ketzaleh several times a week to aid in whatever was needed to advance this effort. Modern day historians attribute to this period the greatest housing blitz ever in Judea and Samaria and, in effect, pushing the settlement movement to the point of no return cementing forever Israeli sovereignty over the region. "The fact that some 800,000 Jews live today over the green line in Judea and Samaria and the eastern neighborhoods of Jerusalem is due in great part to this great, late leader Eugen Gluck, of blessed memory," said Ketzaleh. For decades, Mr. Gluck sponsored the central post-Sukkot holiday "Hakafot Shniyot" of the Jerusalem Municipality in the Jerusalem's Bell Park. Thousands of Jews from numerous countries and all walks of life united together for this celebration. Mr. Gluck was born on August 9, 1927 in Romania. Known by the nickname Yidel, Eugen was just a young boy when World War II broke out. After surviving the concentration camps, he moved to Antwerp, where he married Jeanie. The couple immigrated to New York in 1948. After his arrival to the United States, Mr. Gluck worked several odd jobs until he was finally able to open a bakery with his best friend. However, his yearning to accomplish more led him in 1956 to create Armitron Watches, one of the first watch brands to manufacture affordable digital watches for the masses. Armitron has since become a global brand and is ranked as one of the top 10 fine and fashion watch brands in the U.S. Mr. Gluck's close and trusted partner in building the Torah and the Land of Israel, Ketzaleh, said about his lifelong friend and mentor: "For 40 years, Mr. Gluck made the return of Jews to Judea and Samaria and numerous charities the central thrust of his life. He was a rare Jew who correctly read the map of Israel's future and contributed much to shape it. He was a primary force in changing the way the State of Israel relates to the liberated territories in Judea and Samaria. In the merit of his activism and philanthropy, this region will remain in Jewish hands forever." Mr. Gluck is survived by his three children: Sydney Gluck of Manhattan, Rosie Friedman of Forest Hills, NY, and Barbara Weichselbaum of Lawrence, NY. 2. FEARING HEZBOLLAH ATTACKS, IDF LIMITS ARMY TRAFFIC IN NORTH by Arutz Sheva Staff Israel's defense system on Tuesday morning decided to close several roads near the Lebanon-Israel border to military traffic, due to concerns that Hezbollah will retaliate for recent events in Lebanon and Syria, Israel Hayom reported. The closure, which includes all roads within 5 kilometers of the border, does not apply to civilian traffic. Affected routes include Route 8990, 8993, 8967, 886, and part of 899, Israel Hayom added. On Monday night, Hezbollah claimed that two Israeli drones fell in Beirut. According to their claim, the first drone was armed with 5.5 kilograms (12 lbs) of C4, a powerful explosive, and the second drone was armed as well but crashed prematurely. The terror organization also claimed that the drones were not intelligence drones, and that they had been rigged to explode at a certain point. On Sunday, Lebanese Prime Minister Saad Hariri on Sunday condemned Israel allegedly sending UAVs that fell over southern Beirut as a "blatant attack on Lebanon's sovereignty." "This new aggression... forms a threat to regional stability and an attempt to push the situation towards more tension," he said in a statement. Lebanese President Michel Aoun denounced the reported drone attack as a "declaration of war which allows us to resort to our right to defending our sovereignty. We are a people seeking peace, not war, and we don’t accept anyone threatening us in any war." On Saturday, the IDF foiled a planned terrorist attack by Iran, when it struck Iranian targets outside Damascus following intelligence that Iran was planning to launch armed drones at northern Israel. 3. BRITISH TEEN PLEADS NOT GUILTY IN CYPRUS RAPE CLAIM TRIAL by AFP A British teenager accused of falsely claiming she was gang raped by 12 Israeli tourists in Cyprus pleaded not guilty to causing public mischief on Tuesday. The court adjourned the trial until October 2 and the 19-year-old was released on 20,000-euro bail on condition she surrenders her passport and presents herself to police three times a week. Her Cypriot lawyer Nicoletta Charalambidou informed the court that she will request that the Cypriot attorney general suspends criminal proceedings against her client on the grounds that her rape claim retraction was coerced. The teenager was also represented at the Famagusta District Court in Paralimni in southeast Cyprus by British lawyer Lewis Power QC with Michael Polak from British legal aid group Justice Abroad supporting the legal team. If convicted the woman, who has not been named, could face up to one year in prison and a fine of around 1,700 euros. Initially, the teenager had alleged that 12 Israelis raped her on July 17 at a hotel in the resort of Ayia Napa, a magnet for younger tourists attracted by its beaches and nightlife. The Israelis aged 15 to 18 were released last month after the woman was arrested on suspicion of "making a false statement about an imaginary crime", according to Cypriot police. Justice Abroad, which is assisting the teenager, says she did not voluntarily retract the rape allegation. Polak, a British barrister with the organisation, has said the woman was refused legal representation, despite requests and in contravention of the European convention on human rights. Her parents are seeking donations for their daughter's legal defense by setting up a GoFundMe page which has already raised 23,556 pounds (around $28,900, 26,000 euros). "We maintain that the statement was given under duress and in breach of her rights, resulting in the collapse of the initial investigation and charges of public mischief being made against her," the parents said on the page. 4. NETANYAHU WARNS HEZBOLLAH, LEBANON: 'BE CAREFUL' by AFP and Arutz Sheva Staff Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu on Tuesday warned Lebanon, Hezbollah's chief and the head of Iran's elite Quds Force to "be careful" with their words and actions. Addressing Hezbollah leader Hassan Nasrallah, Netanyahu told a conference that "he knows very well that the state of Israel knows how to defend itself well, and to repay its enemies." "I want to say to him and the Lebanese state, which is hosting this organization that aims to destroy us, and I say the same to Qassem Soleimani: Be careful about your words, and even more cautious about your actions." Netanyahu's statements came after Nasrallah, Soleimani and the Lebanese president made statements threatening Israel. The head of Lebanon-based Hezbollah terrorist organization on Sunday denounced an alleged "drone attack" targeting the Lebanese Shiite movement's Beirut stronghold, vowing to "do everything" to thwart Israeli attacks. "What happened yesterday night was a suicide drone attack on a target in Beirut's southern suburb", the first of its kind since 2006, Hassan Nasrallah said in a speech broadcast to thousands of supporters. "We will do everything to prevent" such attacks, he said. "The time when Israeli aircraft come and bombard parts of Lebanon is over." Lebanon's President Michel Aoun called the alleged attack a "declaration of war which allows us to resort to our right to defending our sovereignty." "We are a people seeking peace, not war, and we don’t accept anyone threatening us in any war," he added. Similarly, Qassem Soleimani, head of the Quds Force of the Iranian Revolutionary Guard, threatened Israel on Sunday after the Jewish state thwarted a planned Iranian drone attack. “These insane operations will surely be the last steps of the Zionist regime,” he wrote on Twitter. 5. "HEZBOLLAH ATTACK WILL BE MET BY 'DISPROPORTIONATE' RESPONSE" by Tal Polon The IDF’s northern command has been on high alert for the past two days over concerns of an attack on Israel, following threats from leaders of Hezbollah, Iran, and Lebanon, Channel 12 reported on Monday. According to the report, the IDF has deployed all the forces already in the northern area, while a decision to bring more forces to the area may be made in the coming days. The army believes that Hezbollah will attempt to attack military, rather than civilian, targets. A senior IDF official who spoke with Channel 12 said that, in any event, any attempted Hezbollah attack on Israel will be met with a “disproportionate” Israeli response. The report comes after the IDF announced on Saturday night that it struck Iranian targets in Syria, thereby thwarting an Iranian drone attack on Israel. Hours later, the Hezbollah terror group claimed that Israeli drones had fallen in the Beirut area. In addition, Lebanese media reported on Sunday night that the Israel Air Force had attacked targets near the Lebanon-Syria border. Prime Minister Netanyahu on Monday night vowed to thwart Iranian attempts to harm the State of Israel, while also calling on the international community to take action against Iran. "Iran acts on a broad front to bring out murderous terrorist attacks against the State of Israel," Netanyahu said. "Israel will continue to defend its security however that may be necessary. I call on the international community to act immediately so that Iran stops these attacks. " 6. WATCH: IRAN'S QUDS FORCE ATTEMPTS DRONE ATTACK ON ISRAEL by Arutz Sheva Staff 📹 To watch the video: https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/267881 The Israeli military released footage Sunday evening from an attempted drone attack by Iranian-linked terrorists in southern Syria last week. On Thursday, terrorists linked to Iran’s Quds Force in Syria attempted to launch a multi-pronged attack by explosive-laden drone aircraft on multiple targets in northern Israel. The bomb-carrying unmanned aircraft were to have crashed into targets in Israel in a kind of “kamikaze”-style attack, IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus said. Israeli forces foiled the attacks, the IDF said, without specifying how the drones were repulsed. In the video, Iranian Quds Force members can be seen carrying one of the drones from the failed attack from its planned launch site adjacent to the Syrian viliage of Arneh. On Saturday, Israeli aircraft struck Iranian military targets in the village of Aqraba, southeast of Damascus, where the drone operation was centered. At least five people were killed, including Hezbollah terrorists and at least one Iranian official, the London-based Syrian Syrian Observatory for Human Rights monitor group. IDF REVEALS: IRAN ATTEMPTED DRONE KAMIKAZE ATTACKS ON ISRAEL by David Rosenberg Iranian forces stationed in Syria planned to use a number of unmanned aircraft carrying explosive material to crash into targets in northern Israel, the IDF said Sunday, adding that one abortive attempt was made to launch the attacks last week. On Sunday, IDF spokesperson Lt. Col. Jonathan Conricus spoke with reporters and shared some details of the recent plot by Iranian-backed forces in Syria to attack northern Israel with drone aircraft. According to the Conricus, Iran’s Quds Force, part of the Revolutionary Guards, had been preparing for the attack for the past several months, and had recently dispatched four Iranian drone operators to Syria to remotely control unmanned Iranian aircraft during an attack on northern Israel. Each drone was to carry several kilograms of high-explosives, slip into Israeli territory, and then crash into Israeli targets – with each drone assigned to a separate target. The drones would thus serve effectively as unmanned suicide bombers, or "kamikaze drones" as Conricus described them, and would be destroyed in the attacks along with their targets. But Israeli intelligence had discovered the plot weeks ago, and kept track of the Iranian operation, which is said to have been personally overseen by Quds Force chief Qassem Soleimani. Conricus added that the Iranian forces in Syria even attempted to launch the attacks last Thursday, but said Israel managed to repulse the attempted infiltration. Conricus declined to specify how the attacks were thwarted. 8. POLL: RIGHT AND LEFT NECK AND NECK by Arutz Sheva Staff The recent security incidents have caused voters to turn to the larger political parties at the expense of the smaller parties, according to a new poll by Kan News. If the elections were held today, the Likud party would receive 32 Knesset seats, while the Blue and White party would receive 31 seats, The Joint Arab List would place third with 11 seats. The Yamina party would receive 10 seats. The Yisrael Beyteinu party would finish with nine seats. The Labor-Gesher list lead by Amir Peretz would receive seven seats, as would the haredi parties Shas and United Torah Judaism. The Democratic Union would receive six seats. The poll found the race tightening, with the right-wing bloc only one seat ahead without Avigdor Liberman's Yisrael Beyteinu party. The right-wing bloc would receive 56 seats, compared to 55 for the left-wing and Arab bloc. Neither side would be able to form a coalition. The Otzma Yehudit and Zehut parties would both fail to clear the electoral threshold. | |
