THE UNITED RIGHT'S NEW DEMANDS FOR THE LIKUD 1. EX SHIN BET HEAD: 'ANNEXATION COULD LEAD TO NEEDLESS BLOODSHED' by Arutz Sheva Staff Former Shin Bet director Yoram Cohen responded to Wednesday evening's attack on the Gaza border, and warned that annexing Area C could lead to “needless bloodshed.” "An Israeli response can bring about a round of hundreds of rockets,” Cohen told Galei Tzahal. “Our deterrence may have been hurt by the fact that we did not want to deteriorate into a major campaign or war." Cohen also recalled the period of Operation Protective Edge, when he served as the Shin Bet commander, and took some of the blame for the operation's failures. "We did not know in the summer of 2014 what the tunnel shaft exits on the Israeli side were and we did not properly assess the other party's intentions in terms of going to war." He asserted that Israeli annexation of Area C in Judea and Samaria "could lead to needless bloodshed. We need to proceed with steps to reduce the occupation in Judea and Samaria: To improve the transportation, improve the work, and also move areas from B [mixed Israeli and Palestinian Authority control -ed] to A [predominantly PA control]." 2. WANTED SON OF OSAMA BIN LADEN DEAD by Arutz Sheva Staff Intelligence information indicates the death of the wanted son of Osama bin Laden, 30-year-old Hamza. The officials refused to provide further details. No response was received from the White House. In March, the US State Department announced it was offering a $ 1 million prize to anyone who would provide information about Hamza bin Laden's whereabouts. In recent years, Hamza has posted messages in videos calling on his adherents to attack the US and its allies in revenge for his father's death. 3. 'ANTI-SEMITISM IN GERMANY HAS DEVELOPED A LIFE OF ITS OWN' by David Rosenberg The Jewish man spit on and harassed by a pair of Syrian nationals in Germany earlier this week has been identified as the Rabbi of the Jewish community in Berlin, Rabbi Yehuda Teichtal. The incident occurred last Saturday, German media outlets reported, after Rabbi Teichtal led a prayer service in a synagogue in the Wilmersdorf district of western Berlin. After he left the house of prayer, Rabbi Teichtal was confronted by two Syrian men, ages 19 and 17. The two men spit on Rabbi Teichtal and hurled anti-Semitic epithets. Rabbi Teichtal was with one of his children at the time of the incident. Police were called to the scene and detained one of the two suspects, and later opened an investigation into the incident. On Wednesday, the Jewish community of Berlin revealed that Rabbi Teichtal had been the victim of the incident in question. Rabbi Teichtal said that anti-Semitism had “developed a life” of its own in Germany, but emphasized that most Germans remain committed to uprooting anti-Semitism. "Unfortunately we have to state that the aggressions against Jews have developed a life of their own both in the schoolyards and on the streets of Berlin,” said Rabbi Teichtal. “But I remain convinced that most people in Berlin do not want to accept this aggression against Jews as a sad part of everyday Jewish life. Most people in Berlin want Jewish people to be able to live their Judaism openly without being afraid of being insulted, spat at or even beaten. Of course we will not hide now, but continue to build on love, tolerance, dialogue and education.” 4. IS LIKUD BEHIND ANTI-BENNETT CAMPAIGN? by Arutz Sheva Staff The Likud party is campaigning against former Education Minister Naftali Bennett, accusing him of "again dismantling" the right-wing bloc, Ma’ariv reported Thursday. The campaign comes amid media reports that Bennett is opposed to improving the offer given to Otzma Yehudit by the leaders of the United Right list. According to the report, the Likud initiated the campaign, despite the ongoing denials from the party. The Likud responded: "No response." It is of note that the mere publication of the political campaign without any signatory body apparently constitutes a violation of the law, according to the ruling of the Central Election Commission Chairman, Justice Hanan Meltzer. Over the past day, the prime minister and other Likud officials have exerted heavy pressure on the heads of the United Right to improve the proposal given to the Otzma Yehudit party so as to integrate it into the list. Right now, the United Right is refusing to change the proposal, according to which Otzma Yehudit will receive the 8th and 13th places on the list for the 22nd Knesset. 5. TERRORIST MADE USE OF IDF BATTERIES by Arutz Sheva Staff 📹 To watch the video: https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/266794 Hani Abu Salah, the Hamas terrorist who entered Israel from Gaza on Wednesday night, opened fire and wounded an officer and two other soldiers, utilizing the batteries the IDF built to deal with Gaza riots. IDF Spokesman Brigadier General Ronen Manellis said of the incident: "Around two o'clock at night, lookouts in the Kissufim area saw a suspect approaching the fence. Action was taken against the approach, routine activity that occurs a lot. The force that arrived came with the perception that it was coming for an infiltration incident. It is unclear at this point whether the force realized there was a possibility that the suspect was armed." Manelis explained that when the IDF force reached the area, the suspect was already in Israeli territory and a shooting event ensued. "A commander of the unit was moderately wounded from the shooting. Two were wounded lightly, one from shrapnel and the other suffered from buzzing in his eardrum from his own shooting. At this point, troops from the (Golani) battalion reached the area and secured it. Activity to hit the terrorist began, all the while monitored by lookouts. The terrorist was armed with grenades and a Kalashnikov. The mounting forces killed him. At the same time, a tank fired at a Hamas position.” "The terrorist was wearing a Hamas uniform and also used one of the grenades. The incident ended when he was killed in the battery space along the fence. The first force which included the wounded did not eliminate the terrorist, the second force eliminated him with shots from a light weapon,” he added. Two IDF fighters who were lightly wounded in the attack were released from Soroka Hospital. The moderately wounded officer is still hospitalized. 6. THREE SOLDIERS WOUNDED IN CLASHES ON GAZA BORDER by Elad Benari 📹 To watch the video: https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/266786 An IDF officer was moderately wounded and two fighters were lightly wounded in an exchange of fire with Arab terrorist who crossed the Gaza border fence and entered Israel. The incident occurred overnight Wednesday, when IDF fighters identified a suspect approaching the fence. After crossing the perimeter fence into Israeli territory, the terrorist opened fire at the fighters. The fighters located the terrorist and opened fire at him until he was eliminated. In addition, a Hamas post was attacked by an IDF tank. During the incident, several roads were closed to traffic and additional reinforcements were sent to secure the surrounding communities. The IDF stressed that entire incident took place in the border area. The wounded fighters were evacuated for medical treatment at a hospital. Their families have been informed. The IDF Spokesperson's Unit said that the terrorist who crossed the Gaza border fence was armed with rifles and grenades and dressed in a Hamas uniform. However, it is believed that he acted independently. Wednesday night's incident comes a day after the IDF completed a large-scale drill of its Southern Command to improve the military's readiness for war against terrorist organizations in Gaza. 7. THIS IS HOW THE IDF PREPARES FOR WAR by Arutz Sheva Staff 📹 To watch the video: https://www.israelnationalnews.com/News/News.aspx/266765 The IDF is preparing for the possibility of a significant escalation in the south. Chief of Staff, Maj. Gen. Aviv Kochavi, issued instructions when he took office that the IDF would increase its readiness for a military campaign in the Gaza Strip. The readiness process involves a partnership of all bodies in the General Staff headed by the Southern Command. The process focuses on increasing the breadth of General Staff goals, empowering intelligence, linking field units with real-time intelligence, regional organization, training, and extensive logistical effort. The process of increasing readiness was carried out on several levels. The first was battle conduct; In the first half of 2019 a full procedure for battle conduct was carried out by the Southern Command and the General Staff with all the field units to fight in the Gaza Strip. In addition, as part of campaign readiness, the Intelligence Division, in cooperation with the Southern Command, increased the range of targets for war, while building fire plans tailored to the campaign. Another tier was developed in the last six months, when the Southern Command developed a specialized training program addressing a combat scenario in the South. The program included battalion fire exercises called the “Southern Command Test” based on criteria specific to combat in the Gaza Strip. Over the course of the first half of 2019, 30 such exercises were conducted. In addition, the “Coiled Spring” course was held, which trained commanders from the company level and above using a virtual reality simulation, simulating the expected combat conditions in the Gaza Strip and emphasizing the enemies' preparedness. About two weeks ago, a large-scale exercise was performed that examined the effectiveness of commanders in combat. Eight divisional commanders, hundreds of reserve personnel, air force and naval forces from the Ashdod arena participated in the exercise. In recent months, a concentrated effort has been made to organize civilian and military space on the border of the Gaza Strip, led by the Gaza Division's engineering forces. The efforts have been made with the knowledge that a shift from routine to emergency scenario in the region can happen very quickly. 8. THE UNITED RIGHT'S NEW DEMANDS FOR THE LIKUD by Arutz Sheva Staff With the Thursday night deadline for registering party lists for the next Knesset election fast approaching, the United Right alliance has issued a new set of demands to the Likud in exchange for including the Otzma Yehudit party in the joint list. According to a report by Kan Wednesday afternoon, the United Right – an alliance of the New Right, Jewish Home, and National Union factions – has responded to pressure from Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu to take in the Otzma Yehudit faction with a new list of demands. Until now, talks between Otzma and the United Right have remained deadlocked, after Otzma turned down an offer to place one candidate on the eighth slot on the joint Knesset list, and a second on the 16th spot. Now, the United Right appears prepared to accept accept Otzma Yehudit candidate Itamar Ben-Gvir’s demand that he be placed on the fifth spot on the list – but only in exchange for concessions from Netanyahu. While in the previous election, the Likud included a Jewish Home candidate on its Knesset list, essentially giving the party an extra seat in the Knesset, the Likud has signaled its unwillingness to repeat the arrangement. The United Right, according to the Kan report, has informed the Likud that it is willing to accept both Ben-Gvir’s demands and the Likud’s decision not to reserve a spot on its list for a Jewish Home candidate. That acceptance, however, is conditioned on promises from the Prime Minister for two senior positions in the next government. Netanyahu is said to have already promised the party two ministries – likely the Transportation and Education Ministries, which the party already holds. In its new set of demands, the United Right has asked for two of the following ministries: Defense, Foreign Affairs, Finance, or the Justice Ministry. Sources within the United Right responded to the report saying that the party had in fact asked for a reserved spot within the Likud, this time for an Otzma Yehudit candidate. “The only thing we’ve requested from the Likud is a reserved spot on the list for Otzma Yehudit. If the Prime Minister wants to grant that, there’s no question he would succeed in [doing so].” | |
