A gang of burglars who broke into a Chabad house in Nairobi, Kenya and assaulted a couple working there as emissaries, caused tens of thousands of dollars in damage during the home invasion, a relative says, but left the couple's children unharmed.
In a predawn home invasion early Wednesday morning, a gang of five burglars broke into the Chabad house in the Kenyan capital of Nairobi where Rabbi Shmuel Notik, an Israeli native, and his wife, Chaya Notik, live.
During the break-in, the gang assaulted both Rabbi Notik and his wife, and stole thousands of dollars-worth of property, including cell phones, jewelry, cash, passports, and computers.
Moshe Notik, Rabbi Shmuel Notik's brother, said that his brother had suffered light injuries during the attack, but that his sister-in-law, Chaya, was listed in moderate condition and required surgery after suffering head injuries.
"The gang of burglars broke into the Chabad house after they had managed to overpower the local guards," Moshe Notik said."
"The burglars found two yeshiva students at the Chabad house, and bound their arms and legs and gagged them with cloth."
Moshe said that despite the violent attacks on his brother and sister-in-law, the burglars did not attack the couple's three children.
"They began to beat the rabbi's wife, Chaya, with clubs. She woke up from sleep and started to scream, so the burglars beat her until she was bloodied up. They also threatened to kill her while making anti-Semitic references. 'If you keep resisting, your life will be ended,' they said. 'Where is the money?'"
The burglars also tied up Rabbi Notik, Moshe added.
"They bound his arms and legs and tried to get money from him. During the burglary, they stole computers, cellular phones, phylacteries, jewelry, money, a Hanukkah menorah, candle holders, Kiddush cups, food, and things from the kitchen. They also trashed the house."
At the end of the incident, the Notiks and their three children were forced into the bathroom, where they were left locked inside until police came.
"They're in a state of shock," continued Moshe Notik. "As far as they can tell, the burglary was motivated by anti-Semitism. They estimated that the total losses incurred total in the tens of thousands of dollars."
The local Israeli consul general is in contact with the family, the Israeli foreign ministry said. The ministry added that it viewed the incident as a criminal matter, and that local authorities were handling the investigation.
In 2014, Rabbi Notik was robbed at knife-point in a Nairobi street. He managed to escape unscathed after giving the robbers his prayer book, shofar, and lapel pin.

2. 'IRAN WILL MAKE US REGRET ITS DECISION TO SANCTION US'
by David Rosenberg
Iranian President Hassan Rouhani vowed Wednesday to make the US regret its sanctions against the Islamic republic, while demanding that the US drop the sanctions and offer an apology as conditions for the renewal of negotiations.
Rouhani spoke out Wednesday following the Trump administration's decision Tuesday not to renew sanctions exemptions granted to several countries doing business with Iran.
"The United States, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates, the three largest energy producers in the world, together with our friends and allies, are committed to ensuring the world's oil markets receive all supplies, including the deficit created by the non-use of Iranian oil.
"The Trump administration and its allies are determined to continue and expand the campaign of economic pressure on Iran to put an end to the destabilizing activities of the regime, which is a threat to the United States, its partners, and its allies in the Middle East," the White House said Tuesday.
On Wednesday, Rouhani responded to the decision, saying that Iran had "no choice but to resist".
"The US is not ready to hold negotiations at all and its measures are aimed at breaking up the Iranian nation. We have to make the US regret its decision for which we have no choice but to resist."
The Iranian president went on to suggest that his country was open to renewing talks with Washington – but only if the US dismantles its sanctions regime against Iran as a precondition – and apologizes.
"We have always been men of negotiations as we are men of war. But negotiations are possible if [the US] lifts all restrictions, apologizes for all wrongdoings and practices mutual respect. In practice, we have to prove that Americans have made a mistake and miscalculated."
3. HAREDI FACTION OFFERS COMPROMISE ON YESHIVA STUDENT DRAFT LAW
by Arutz Sheva Staff
The United Torah Judaism faction has offered a compromise on what is widely expected to be one of the most difficult issues facing the 35th Government of Israel – passage of a new draft law governing exemptions for yeshiva students.
As talks for the formation of a governing coalition continue, lawmakers from the UTJ have proposed a compromise plan aimed at passing a new draft law acceptable to both the haredi public and the Yisrael Beytenu party.
Under the arrangement put forward by the UTJ, according to a report by Yisrael Hayom on Wednesday, the haredi faction would accept the draft of a bill proposed by Yisrael Beytenu in the previous government – with the addition of a new article.
The bill drawn up by a committee of security officials at Yisrael Beytenu chief and then-Defense Minister Avidgor Liberman had largely protected the draft deferment program for yeshiva students, but included sanctions on yeshivas for failing to meet draft quotas, and included a clause nullifying the law if the haredi community as a whole failed to meet draft quotas for an extended period of time.
According to the report, the UTJ party is willing to accept the bill, provided it be modified to include a provision declaring that any individual yeshiva student who wishes to study Torah will be permitted to do so.
In exchange for backing the draft bill, UTJ is reportedly demanding support for an amendment to Israel's Basic Laws, with a bill which would establish Torah study as an officially recognized value. This alteration to the Basic Law would, UTJ lawmakers say, prevent the Supreme Court from striking down the draft law.
Since the late 1970s, the Israeli Defense Ministry has offered nearly all full-time yeshiva students open-ended annual draft deferments. By the 1990s, however, the practice came under fire from critics who called the policy de facto discrimination against secular Israeli Jews.
While haredi lawmakers pointed to broader blanket exemptions from IDF service enjoyed by some minority groups – like most of Israel's Arab population and Orthodox Jewish women – the Supreme Court ruled that the draft deferment program was indeed a violation of Israel's Basic Laws.
After striking down the Tal Law – which was intended to encourage haredi enlistment while protecting the deferment program – in 2012, the Supreme Court charged the Knesset with passing new legislation concerning the drafting of yeshiva students.
In 2014, the 33rd Israeli government, at the behest of the Yesh Atid party, passed a more restrictive draft law, placing limitations on the draft deferment program.
A year later, however, the 34th Israeli government repealed most of the changes made by the new draft law, largely restoring the status quo ante.
In 2017, the Supreme Court intervened again, striking down the 2015 amendments to the draft law, and giving the government one year to pass a replacement bill.
After multiple extensions by the Supreme Court, the government failed to pass a replacement bill. In December 2018, the government moved to dissolve the 20th Knesset and head to early elections, forcing a further delay in the passage of a replacement draft law.
Avidgor Liberman, who leads the Yisrael Beytenu party and served as Defense Minister from 2016 until November 2018, has demanded that the next government pass the draft bill drawn up at his behest by a committee of security establishment officials.
Haredi lawmakers, however, have called for a comprehensive bill which would enshrine the deferments in Israel's Basic Laws, and protect the existing draft deferment system with no changes.
Both Yisrael Beytenu and the haredi parties are needed by the Likud to form a majority coalition of at least 61 seats in the 120-member Knesset.
4. ELI YISHAI TO RECEIVE MINISTRY IN NEXT GOVERNMENT?
by Arutz Sheva Staff
Yahad part chairman and former Interior Minister Eli Yishai, who once led the Shas party, says Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu promised to appoint him in the 35th Israeli government in exchange for his deal with the United Torah Judaism party.
According to a report by Hadashot 13, Yishai has claimed that prior to this month's elections, Prime Minister Netanyahu offered to appoint him as a minister in the next government in exchange for dropping out of the race and endorsing the UTJ party.
Yahad, which Yishai founded ahead of the 2015 elections, narrowly failed to enter the Knesset that year on a joint ticket with the right-wing Otzma Yehudit faction. The party planned an independent bid in this year's election after talks with the Jewish Home fell through for a joint ticket.
Two weeks before the election, however, Yishai dropped out of the race and endorsed the UTJ party.
The endorsement helped UTJ secure its eight mandate, which it won by a razor-thin margin of just 72 votes.
On Tuesday, it was reported that Yishai claimed Netanyahu had promised him a ministry in the next government if UTJ managed to win eight seats in the Knesset.
While Yishai has turned to Netanyahu to appoint him to a position in the 35th Government of Israel, Interior Minister and Shas chief Aryeh Deri, a long-time rival of Yishai, has reportedly worked to block Yishai from joining the government.

Israeli security forces operated in the Palestinian Authority-controlled town of Zawiya in Samaria overnight to demolish the home of an Arab terrorist who murdered two Israelis in a combination shooting and stabbing attack last month, Arab media outlets claimed Wednesday morning.
According to a report by the Palestinian Authority outlet WAFA, IDF forces entered the town of Zawiya just before midnight Tuesday night. Residents of Zawiya clashed with the Israeli security personnel and threw stones during the operation, forcing the IDF to respond with riot control measures including tear gas. No injuries were reported during the operation.
The IDF force demolished the home of Omar Abu Laila, the terrorist responsible for the murder of an Israeli soldier at the entrance to Ariel last month, as well as the murder of Rabbi Ahiad Ettinger in a shooting attacking that same day. A second Israeli soldier was also wounded in the attacks.
The demolition lasted more than seven hours, and was completed after 6:00 a.m., WAFA claimed.
On March 17th, Abu Laila stabbed 19-year-old IDF soldier Gal Keidan to death at the entrance to Ariel in Samaria. Abu Laila then took Keidan's rifle and opened fire at Israeli civilians and soldiers at the junction, before fleeing the scene in a stolen car.
Abu Laila then shot two Israelis, including 47-year-old Rabbi Ahiad Ettinger, a father of 12.
Two days after the attack, Abu Laila was shot and killed during a firefight with Israeli security forces near Ramallah.

Jared Kushner, the advisor and son-in-law of US President Donald Trump, said that the administration's long-awaited peace plan would not focus on the Two State solution in contrast to past peace plans.
Speaking at the Time100 Summit Tuesday, Kushner said that "our focus is really on the bottom up, which is how do you make the lives of the Palestinian people better, what can you resolve to allow these areas to become more investable?"
"We deal with all the core status issues because you have to do it, but we've also built a robust business plan for the whole region," he said.
"I think that what we do is something that allows for Israel to maintain security, but there will be tough compromises for both," he added.
When asked if the plan would focus on the Two State solution, Kushner said that "if people focus on the old traditional talking points we will never make progress."
"What we will put out is different," he said, noting the failure of past attempts based on the Two State Solution.
Kushner said that he had hoped to release the plan, which President Trump has called the "deal of the century," last year. However, the administration held off on releasing the plan after the Israeli government announced new elections. He said that the plan will be released after the new coalition is formed.
"Once that's done we'll probably be in the middle of Ramadan, so we'll wait until after Ramadan and then we'll put our plan out," Kushner said.
Earlier, it was reported that the White House is discouraging the use of the term "two-state solution" when describing possible outcomes to the Israeli-Palestinian Authority (PA) conflict.
A senior White House official on Monday confirmed to the Jewish Telegraphic Agency a report that appeared over the weekend on Sky News Arabic, a satellite TV station, and picked up by the Times of Israel.
"The two-state solution term means different things to different people," the official told JTA. "There is no point in using a phrase that never achieved peace. Our plan provides a clear, realistic and detailed vision of what peace could actually look like."

Prime Minister Binyamin Netanyahu pledge to build a new community named after US President Donald Trump on the Golan Heights in gratitude for the president's recognition of Israel's sovereignty on the strategically important territory.
During a family visit to the Golan Heights, Netanyahu said that "all Israelis were deeply moved when President Trump made his historic decision to recognize Israel's sovereignty on the Golan Heights."
"Therefore, after the Passover holiday, I intend to bring to the government a resolution calling for a new community on the Golan Heights named after President Donald J. Trump."
8. PM'S SON: WHICH 'PALESTINE' WERE THEY LOOKING TO LIBERATE?
by Arutz Sheva Staff
Quick history lesson about the Israeli- "Palestinian" conflict. The Philistines were Greek people invading and settling on the coast of Israel more then (sic) 3000 years ago. They were disappeared more then 2500 years ago with the Assyrian occupation.
2000 years ago Israel was part of the Roman Empire and its official name was "province of Judea," with its capital Jerusalem.
Jesus was a Jew and in the top of the cross was a sign saying INRI-meaning "Jesus of Nazareth king of the Jews."
The Jews rebelled several times against the Romans and in 70 ad they destroyed the Temple in Jerusalem.
On 120 ad there was the Bar Kokva revolt that gained Jewish Independence for 1 year. There Roman came back, crushed the revolt and changed the name of Judea to "Palestine" as a punishment, naming it after the long extinct Philistines Greek people.
Fast forward to modern times, every single American and European documentation of the Holy Land in the 19 century (that was just a part of the Ottoman Empire) describes an empty land. Mark Twain wrote a book about it after he traveled here in the mid 19 century. The land started to prosper because of Jewish pilgrims coming back to their homeland in the late 19 century.
The British then occupied the Holy Land and called it Palestine after the Roman name. The only people that called themselves Palestinians back then were Jews. For example the Zionist "Jerusalem Post" was named back then "Palestine Post." The Arabs only came less then a 100 years ago as labor immigrants for the Jews and British.
You can see that the most common last names in the PA (Palestinian Authority - ed.) is "al Masri" (Egyptian), "Halabi" (Alepo), "Hijazi" (Saudi Arabia) etc.
The British and the whole international community agreed that the Mandate of Palestine (from the river to the sea) will be the Jewish homeland, in the San Remo accords in 1920, making it international law, British law and American law.
The Arabs here only started to call themselves Palestinians in 1964 When the PLO (Palestine Liberation Organization - ed.) was created by the Soviets. Interesting to mention that when it was created all of the West Bank (Judea and Samaria), east Jerusalem, and Gaza were in Arab hands. So which "Palestine" they wanted to liberate?
