1. REPORT: TRUMP PEACE PLAN WILL DIVIDE JERUSALEM
by Arutz Sheva Staff

Will the "Deal of the Century" peace plan of the Trump administration demand far-reaching concessions from Israel?

Hadashot 13 reported that the peace plan formulated by the White House and which President Trump is interested in presenting in the coming months includes the establishment of a Palestinian state in about 90 percent of Judea and Samaria, with at least part of eastern Jerusalem as its capital.

The report, which was quoted from an American source, said that the Americans would demand that isolated settlements outside the blocs not be expanded and outposts considered illegal by Israeli law be evacuated.

The source claimed that the Palestinian state would be built on more than twice the total area of Areas A and B under the control of the Palestinian Authority today.

He added that Trump would seek to divide Jerusalem from a sovereign perspective into two capitals - Israel's in the west of the city and parts of eastern Jerusalem, and the Palestinian one in the Arab neighborhoods of eastern Jerusalem.

Under the plan, the Temple Mount, the Western Wall and the Mount of Olives would reportedly remain under Israeli sovereignty, but with full administrative partnership with the Palestinians.

2. NETANYAHU SET FOR FIRST-EVER VISIT BY ISRAEL PM TO CHAD
by AFP and Nitzan Keidar, A7

Prime Minister Netanyahu will embark upon the first-ever visit by an Israeli premier to Chad in the coming days as the two countries move to renew diplomatic ties, his office said Thursday.

Netanyahu's trip to the Muslim-majority central African nation on Sunday comes after Chadian President Idriss Deby Itno visited Israel in November.

The prime minister's office had not yet provided further details on the trip, though it was expected to be only a one-day visit.

A political source said that the visit might include an official announcement of the resumption of diplomatic relations between the countries.

Israeli media said it would be the first by a premier.

Netanyahu said during Deby's November visit that he intended to announce the resumption of diplomatic ties during an upcoming trip to Chad.

Pressure from Muslim African nations, accentuated by the Arab-Israeli wars of 1967 and 1973, led a number of African states to sever relations with the Jewish state.

But in recent years, Israel has held out the prospect of cooperation in fields ranging from security to technology to agriculture, to improve ties on the continent.

Diplomatic relations between Israel and Chad, a country of some 15 million people, were severed in 1972.

Deby is one of Africa's longest-serving leaders.

He took over the arid, impoverished nation in 1990 and won a disputed fifth term in April 2016.

3. SOVEREIGNTY MOVEMENT: 'THANK YOU ABBAS. NO TO RUMORED PLAN'
by Mordechai Sones

The Sovereignty Movement responded to reported details of the political plan by US President Donald Trump. Movement heads Yehudit Katsover and Nadia Matar say: "'Thank you' to Abbas and the Palestinian leadership who again save us from a suicidal plan, this time, from a friendly administration. This is what happened with plans by Barak, Olmert, and Livni. It's happening this time as well, but Israel mustn't pin her hopes and her future on the Arab leadership's constant refusals."

Katsover and Matar are responding to reports that the Trump plan will include dividing Jerusalem and establishing a Palestinian state on 90% of Judea and Samaria, and PA rejection of the idea.

"The right-wing government must speak out. The meaning of the two-states idea is even more dangerously suicidal politically than the Iranian nuclear plan. Political capitulation will send a terrible message of weakness to Israel's neighbors and will be an invitation for terror, military confrontation, and even Iranian attacks. The lack of resoluteness after the Six Day War is the cause of so many of our problems. Now, as unofficial details are published as a kind of trial balloon to gauge Israeli response both from the leadership and the public, we must respond with full power with implementing Israeli sovereignty in Judea and Samaria. In this way Israel will make clear its position even before the American plan is published officially," say Katsover and Matar.

Sovereignty
Flash 90
"If Israel doesn't express its position resolutely, we cannot expect more adamant positions from the White House. If the US is indeed a friend, it will understand the tremendous objections that the Israeli public, government, and intellectual leaders in Israel have to steps of this sort. These recent publications present Israel with a critical test of her seriousness in the various layers of society even before the actual plan is released. We must pass this test and stop the actual plan."

Katsover and Matar emphasize: "This Land waited for its children and received us with open arms. It has yielded its fruit in great abundance. This abundance has spilled over to our neighbors. There is no other country where they can thrive and enjoy our democracy, our medical care, our universities, our agriculture, and much more. Israeli abundance has spilled over and makes the entire world more fruitful. Constricting our borders, Heaven forbid, would force us into endless battles for our very existence.

"We must wake up and respond with an absolute 'NO!' to the rumors and totally reject the American plan.

"We have not conquered a foreign land, but have returned to the inheritance of our forefathers.

"Any compromise would harm the principle of this eternal truth: This Land is ours. No people gives up its homeland. The withdrawals done by Israeli leadership until this point have strengthened Arab propaganda that sadly has been incomparably more successful than accurate information, and their false narrative continues to spread. This is a critical time for the People to demand from its elected officials, who seek our support at the ballot box, to speak out openly and clearly. We will know the true Right by its commitment to sovereignty over our Land," Katsover and Matar conclude.

5. NY MUSLIM LEADER: WIFE-BEATING 'ONLY IN VERY RARE CIRCUMSTANCES'
by Mordechai Sones

Good news for women: Middle East Media Research Institute (MEMRI) reports during a December 9, 2018 lecture in the Muslim Center of New York in Flushing, Queens, Sheikh Yaser Nadeem Al-Wajdi discussed wife-beating in Islam, saying it is only permissible "under very rare circumstances", such as when a woman is being disloyal, and her husband doesn't want to seek separation or Islamic legal action for the sake of the children.

In such situations, Sheikh Al-Wajdi said, the husband must first admonish his wife verbally, and then he must leave the conjugal bed. After these steps, he may give her a love-tap with a miswak (dental twig) in a fashion that is not hard and that is meant to "hurt her dignity, target her dignity".

The lecture was streamed live on the Muslim Center of New York's Facebook page. Sheikh Al-Wajdi is the director of Darul Uloom Online and the Dean of Academic Affairs at the Illinois-based Institute of Islamic Education. He was educated in Pakistan, India, and the United States.

6. ISRAELI STUDENT MURDERED IN AUSTRALIA WHILE ON PHONE WITH SISTER
by AFP

An Israeli student has been killed in a late-night attack in Australia while she was speaking on the phone with her sister, police said Thursday.

Police appealed to the public for help tracking down the killer of 21-year-old Aiia Maasarwe, from the Arab city of Baqa al-Gharbiyye in central Israel, whose body was found early Wednesday near the
campus of the Melbourne university where she was studying.

"This was an horrendous, horrific attack inflicted on a completely innocent young woman who was a visitor to our city," Detective Inspector Andrew Stamper told reporters in Melbourne Thursday.

Maasarwe, who was reportedly five months into a year-long exchange at Melbourne's LaTrobe University, was riding a tram home from a comedy club to the suburb of Bundoora before she was met by her attacker around midnight.

She was talking on the phone with her sister, who was overseas and raised the alarm after something went awry mid-conversation, police said.

"(Her sister) heard the sound of the phone falling to the ground and heard some voices," Stamper said.

Her body was found Wednesday morning by passers-by at 7:00am about 50 meters (165 feet) from the stop where she exited the tram.

Stamper said the report from her sister came in at about the same time.

Police would not confirm reports they were investigating a sexual assault but said known sex offenders are an "active line of inquiry".

Officers retrieved a black baseball cap and a grey t-shirt they believe were worn by the perpetrator from the crime scene, which they described as "very distressing".

The victim's family, who are on their way to Australia, described Maasarwe as "happy", "adventurous" and "smart".

"I was in shock, I couldn't believe it... the day before my wife had said to me, 'We'll have to go to Australia, Australia's very safe, very nice'," the victim's uncle Rame Maasarwe told national broadcaster ABC from the United States.

"We cannot believe that something like this happened in Australia, we think it's very safe there."

Maasarwe was reportedly planning to go to China to work with her father's business after her studies.

Police said they were "confident" of finding the perpetrator.

7. 'A STORMY DAY FOR ME AS JUSTICE MINISTER AND AS A WOMAN'
by Ido Ben Porat

Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked on Wednesday addressed the affair that is shaking the Israeli legal world.

"This is a stormy day for me as the justice minister and as a woman," Shaked said, stressing that "the judges in Israel are doing their work faithfully, and hopefully the investigation will be completed soon. I was not summoned for testimony or interrogated. "

Israeli police are investigating serious allegations of bribery and sexual misconduct connected with the selection of judges, authorities revealed Wednesday morning.

According to a police spokesperson, the special anti-corruption division, Lahav 433, is investigating allegations that sexual favors were traded in exchange for the advancement of a judicial appointment.

The current investigation was launched two weeks ago, after police received information in the matter.

The case involves the appointment of a female justice of the peace several years ago and the attempted appointment of a female judge in a magistrate's court.

On Wednesday, police arrested a lawyer in connection with the case, and called two other individuals of interest in for questioning. The suspect has been identified as a lawyer, while the two individuals called in for questioning are a judge and a lawyer, both females.

Police carried out a search and seized documents as part of the ongoing investigation.

The probe is being carried in coordination with the Central District prosecutor's office and is being opened with the approval of the Attorney General, Avichai Mandelblit, but he recused himself from dealing with the case due to his personal acquaintance with the central suspect. State Attorney Shai Nitzan is supervising the investigation.

Supreme Court President Esther Hayut and Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked published a joint statement following the announcement of the investigation. "In recent days there have been widespread rumors about the affair being investigated in Lahav 433, which concerns the appointment of judges," the statement said.

"Details were released today regarding the investigation, and it was clarified that there are suspicions of committing offenses of integrity in connection with the appointment of one justice of the peace several years ago and an attempt to bring a justice of the peace to the District Court who was not advanced.

"As a result of this publication, we saw fit to note that we are confident that the law enforcement system will investigate the affair to the fullest extent and arrive at the truth.

"We also found it worthy of mentioning that during the term of Justice Minister Ayelet Shaked, as the chairperson of the Judicial Selection Committee, the committee appointed 334 judges and senior registrars in a rigorous and professional selection process. Alongside the minister in the committee are two members of the Knesset, the Minister of Finance, three Supreme Court justices, including the President of the Supreme Court, as well as two representatives of the Israel Bar.

Shaked and Hayut added: "The Israeli judiciary has male and female judges, male and female senior registrars who do their job faithfully, honestly and with dedication. It is to be hoped that the investigation will be completed as soon as possible in order to preserve the status of the judiciary and public trust in it. "

The chairman of the Israel Bar Association, attorney Effi Naveh, will take a leave of absence or will resign in light of the affair.

8. MUCH MORE THAN A TREE – IT'S LIFE ITSELF!
by Sponsored Content

Let's make a bet. Take 10 fellow Jews and ask them a very simple question; "What's the next Jewish holiday?" I guarantee you that the overwhelming majority will say "Purim". After all, we recently finished Chanukah and everyone knows that the holiday after that is Purim and then Pesach… right? Dearest friends, if you jump from Chanukah straight to Purim, you will have missed one of the most special, beautiful and meaningful holidays on the Jewish calendar called "Tu B'Shvat".

What kind of holiday is that? There's no Kiddush or Hallel. No building a Sukkah or massive cleaning projects. No special Torah or Megillah reading, no cheesecake, Matza or Marror, no spending $100 on a fancy lemon and no 5,000 calorie meal… so I ask again, what kind of Jewish holiday is that? You are 100% right. Tu B'Shvat is "none of the above" because it doesn't need any of those things. Tu B'Shvat is life itself in its purest form. Allow me to explain.

All the information is on the website here

In Israel, most schools learn half a day on Tu B'Shvat and then the children – together with the teachers – go out of the classroom to make the Land of Israel come alive. It's still the middle of the winter and the ground is wet and muddy yet tens of thousands of children brave the cold to do one of the most basic things a Jew can – and MUST – do… plant a tree in Israel. "And Avraham planted an Eshel in Beersheba" (Beresheit 21:33) According to the Talmud this "Eshel" was not just one tree. "It teaches that he planted an orchard with many types of fruit trees." (Sotah 10a) Our father Avraham, who had just been promised that the Land of Israel would be his and his descendants – FOREVER – did the most basic act one could do: He planted fruit trees in that very soil!

Fast forward about 3,800 years. It's now 5779 (2019) and The Nation of Israel has returned to the Land. We have built homes, schools, cities, factories, airports and hospitals, yet before all those things were done, the early pioneers did something far more basic; they planted trees all across the Land. Why trees? Simple… because a tree is symbolic of life. "Etz chaim hee…" – "It is a tree of life…" (Mishlei 3:18) The more trees we plant – especially fruit trees – the more life we bring to ourselves, our families and the entire Nation of Israel!

This Tu B'Shvat, a special opportunity has presented itself and the Jewish world will be coming together in a show of unity. As you know, just over 2 months ago, 11 Jews were brutally murdered in a congregation in Pittsburgh... the "Tree of Life" congregation! Two major Jewish organizations; World Mizrachi and Zo Artzeinu have come together to plant 11,000 of new fruit "Trees of Life" in Israel, in memory of the 11 Pittsburgh victims of terror. World Mizrachi is a global Religious Zionist movement and has been spreading "Torat Eretz Yisrael" for over 100 years and Zo Artzeinu's "Israel Trees Project" has planted over 300,000 new fruit trees all across Israel – more than any other organization!

The project is open to anyone across the globe, all you need to do is go to the website to plant together with us. The trees will be planted STARTING this Tu B'Shvat (January 21st). Everyone who helps plant trees will receive a personalized color certificate in the mail , all the Mitzvot Ha'tluyot Ba'aretz (commandments tied to the Land of Israel) will be kept with the trees and their fruits, and according to Rav Yosef Efrati, the personal Shamash of Rav Shalom Elyashiv for 10 years and number one expert on Mitzvot Ha'tluyot Ba'aretz, you will be partnering with farmers in Israel and sharing in all the mitzvos such as orlah, neta revai, shmitta, teruma and ma'aser etc. Something Moshe Rabeinu wanted to do, and the Gaon from Vilna wrote about wishing he can do.

Let's show the world that the ground is not just for burial but also for life! Join together with us and plant some trees in memory of the Pittsburgh victims from Tree of Life.
