3. 'RESIDENTS OF THE SOUTH CAN BE CALM'
by Mordechai Sones

Southern region IDF Commander Major General Hertzi Halevi spoke this morning on the eve of Rosh Hashanah of the security threats facing the IDF today.

"The IDF is well prepared and ready," Halevi was quoted in the official IDF Twitter account. "Our enemies in the south and the north have made great efforts not to come into conflict with us because of our strength. The IDF will know how to deal with both arenas."

Halevi took the opportunity to send a reassuring message to the beleaguered southern area residents. "Residents of Israel and residents of the south can be calm and confident in the IDF's capabilities."

Halevi later took the opportunity to express appreciation to IDF forces operating throughout the year in the southern sector.

"We very much appreciate the forces for their magnificent high-quality activity under difficult conditions. Hamas sees our strength and if it tests us, we're very prepared."

4. PUTIN: JEWISH ORGANIZATIONS ARE ACTIVE IN RUSSIAN LIFE
by Arutz Sheva Staff

Russian President Vladimir Putin sent his well-wishes to Russian Jews ahead of Rosh Hashanah.

"For followers of Judaism this holiday stands for moral purification and perfection. On these days, people sum up the outgoing year and make plans for the future.

"I note with satisfaction that Jewish religious organizations are actively engaged in the country's life, conduct effective charity activities, have implemented much needed educational projects, acquaint young people with their rich historical and spiritual heritage, the original culture and traditions of their ancestors.

"The contribution of the Jewish communities toward enhancing inter-ethnic and inter-religious dialogue and consolidating centuries-old friendship of Russia's peoples is definitely important," Putin said.

Eric Michaelson, JNF Chief Israel Officer spoke with Arutz Sheva about the JNF-KKL monument for 9/11 at the entrance to Jerusalem.

He noted that the monument is the only 9/11 monument outside of the US which lists all 2,996 victims of the tragedy.

"It is a symbol of solidarity - as you can see, it is in the shape of the US flag waving in the wind, and it's a flame going to the sky, an eternal flame that won't be extinguished. It's a symbol of the joint destiny of the US and Israel, two nations together in brotherhood in this struggle.

"People frequent the site all the time," he said, adding that monument conveys "the message that we will continue to live and go on."

6. POMPEO TO KHAMENEI: WHAT HAVE YOU DONE FOR PALESTINIANS?
by Elad Benari

US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo responded to Iranian Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, after Khamenei implied on Twitter that Palestinian Arabs should not be neglected.

Khamenei had tweeted a message to Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan in which he wrote, "I appreciate your stances on the issues regarding Myanmar. The Palestinian cause is always important, too and it should not be neglected even for a second."

Pompeo published a series of tweets in which he pointed out how little Iran has done over the years to support Palestinian Arabs.

"Ayatollah Khamenei says he cares about Palestinians. FACT: Since 1994, the U.S. provided $6.3 billion in aid to support the Palestinian people; Iran's morally corrupt regime provided hundreds of millions in aid to terrorists who endanger the Palestinians' lives & livelihoods," he wrote.

"FACT: Iran's regime punished Palestinians by providing them just $20,000 — yes, $20,000 — via UNWRA from 2008 to 2017," continued Pompeo in a second tweet.

"If only the Ayatollah's regime didn't ban social media in Iran, maybe the Iranian people would know the truth about who really cares about Palestinians, and why the regime wastes the people's money on terrorists while they struggle," he concluded.

Iran has enjoyed close relations with Hamas, though relations soured several years ago when Hamas refused to support Syrian President Bashar Al-Assad, a close ally of Iran's, in the uprising against him. An angry Iran then reportedly stopped supplying the terror group with weapons.

Last year, however, Hamas leader Ismail Haniyeh thanked Iran for its "unlimited" support for the Al-Qassam Brigades and its contribution to the development of Hamas's military capabilities, an indication that the rift was over.

Later that year, deputy Hamas leader Salah al-Aruri led a high-ranking delegation to Tehran, where he declared that Hamas and Iran have agreed to set aside their past differences.

Jason Greenblatt, President Donald Trump's Special Representative for International Negotiations, has in the past also pointed out the fact that Iran sends funds to Hamas, which it uses to develop weapons and build tunnels to attack Israel.

7. SENIOR UN, EUROPEAN OFFICIALS SPOTTED AT ANTI-SEMITIC PA DISPLAY
by David Rosenberg

Senior officials from the United Nations and a number of European nations visited an exhibition hosted by the Palestinian Authority featuring explicitly anti-Semitic images last month.

According to a report by Makor Rishon on Friday, early last month, a number of foreign representatives visited an exhibition set up by the Palestinian Authority in the illegal Bedouin outpost of Khan al-Ahmar.

Built in the 1990s, the illegal encampment today houses some 170 Bedouin squatters just outside of the Israeli town of Kfar Adumim, east of Jerusalem. The encampment was never authorized, and is slated for demolition, after the Supreme Court rejected appeals to cancel the eviction orders.

The Palestinian Authority decried the planned demolition, as did the United Nations and European Union.

In protest of the planned demolition, the PA set up an exhibition in Khan al-Ahmar featuring anti-Israel propaganda, including a number of pictures which mirrored classic anti-Semitic themes.

One image, for example, showed an octopus with a Star of David strangling Arab children and crushing churches and mosques, while other pictures show Israeli soldiers preparing to shoot small children.

Last month, a number of foreign officials visited the exhibition, Makor Rishon revealed, including United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO) regional representative Sonia Azzam and United Nations Children's Fund (UNICEF)'s representative to the PA Genevieve Putin.

The South African ambassador to the PA also visited the exhibition, as did envoys from Norway, the UK, the Netherlands, and Germany.

8. WATCH: PRESIDENT RIVLIN WISHES JEWS A HAPPY NEW YEAR

Israeli President Reuven Rivlin in a Rosh Hashanah (Jewisn New Year) greeting stressed the importance of the bonds between the Jewish people.

Rivlin noted the similarity between the Hebrew for "friend" and for "connection" and stressed, "The bonds that hold us together stretch across the world today and deep into our shared history."

"I know we are at a time when some see the things that divide us more clearly than those that unite us. For some, it can be hard to see what we have in common. I know that there are times when we do not agree with each other. I know there are times when we do not feel like 'friends.'

"So, as we approach this Rosh Hashanah, let us reflect on what we share, on the links that bind us together. We are one people, with a shared history and a shared future. We share a commitment to the future of the Jewish people, despite our differences. We share a belief in a better world, and a commitment to bring it about."

Rivlin stressed, "Together, friends, we also face the challenge of rising anti-Semitism, of racism and hatred, around the world. Wherever we choose to live, we must be able to feel proud of being Jewish, and safe to identify as Jewish in whatever way we choose."

Emphasizing the colorful makeup of Israeli society, he added, "Here in Israel, our society brings together different communities: religious and secular, Jewish and Arab, old and young, left and right. We share this land that we love. The bonds between us, friends, are our best hope for a bright future."

"Let us hope that this year we will feel closer to each other, more like friends."

"From the heart of the Jewish world and the capital of the State of Israel, I wish you and your families – Shana Tova uMetukah (a good and sweet year - ed.), and may we all be blessed with many happy and sweet years ahead."
